If agree with that

Let them offer you first, and especially don't bring it up on your first interview.

shite I bought a house last year and after the down payment and buying everything I had pretty much sucked myself down to zero.

So, what happens if you have an emergency?
Posted on 12/17/15 at 9:31 am to Jcorye1
This is why I'm not in a rush to buy a house

All BS aside, that's how this works for a college grad with no leverage.
You take the one that will offer you a comfortable living with the best chance to learn quick. Don't go for the easy money unless you want to keep making that money. Take the challenge and succeed and the money will come.
Eta: with a jag degree, excelling on the job will be paramount. Your education won't carry weight anywhere. You have to perform at a level that exceeds your peers performance.

You're getting a masters at the MIT of the SWAC, so you have all the bargaining chips. Make them pay you before you even interview.

So should I ask for $75000 for my first position or is that being too ambitious.
Are you a P.E.?
If this is his first position, probably not.
Exxon and other O&G giants may be offering 75K+, but I doubt anyone else will do so.

$70k was probably around average for my graduating class. All my offers were 65-70 with the exception of one @ 53k and I was no A student

I felt like I had more money making 70k than I do now making very close to double that. It's easy to get your check spread thin with 401k, insurance, house note, kids, etc. Every tie I got a raise, it went to retirement and savings. But that didn't stop me from wanting a nicer house, better cars, etc. All of a sudden you feel broke (even though you're actually saving the money).
aint that the truth.. Even though when you say 100K it might sound like a lot, but in todays world it really doesn't go that far.

My last job was the easiest negotiation I've ever had. They said they could afford to pay me X dollars. I said, "No, I want Y dollars", and they said okay. Was surprisingly easy
Eta: That was for an "internship" and they offered $10/hr first, and settled on $17.50/hr within a minute

$10 for an internship? Good lord that is piss poor. I would have laughed at them on the spot
Posted on 12/17/15 at 1:04 pm to DrSteveBrule
They hadn't ever had an intern at that office though. Most of their interns work in Seattle or Ft Lauderdale and aren't from the US, so I guess they just take whatever they are given

That's utter BS, unless by easy you mean being stupid with your money.
I wasn't really too stupid with money but I went finished college after 10 years as a single Marine with no regard for jack shite and a newish family. I found out the hard way that making 71K in Richmond, Ca was not the same as making 71K in Foley, Al. We made it work but times were really tight until we got everything figured out. A couple of other students got paid about the same as me to work in Mobile and BR but I got the only Chevron offer at a time when no one was hiring new process engineers and was glad for that.
