So my garbage disposal is no longer functioning properly. The motor works fine, but from what I can tell the "teeth" that grind up the food have knocked loose and are no longer there. I recently fished out the piece below that was loose in there.
Question is, do I need to replace the whole disposal, or just a part of it? If so, what would the section be called?
If I do choose to replace the whole thing, would any brand/make/model disposal work, or do I need to get a specific type to fit my "under sink setup" (piping layout, etc)?

I'd get a new one. Get a 1 hp to grind up anything.

Get a Waste King from Amazon. You can get a 1 HP for like $120. Not necessary really, but get at least 1/2 HP

They're not too hard to install. I did it a couple years ago. You got this mane!

that part is attached to the bottom of the disposal which spins and slings the food against the side to grind it up....

as the others say, just get a new one and move on, as it is not worth worrying about...

if you get one that is the same brand you have, you may not even need to take the flange out of the sink to replace the unit.

just to be on the safe side, I would pick up a small container of plumber's putty just in case, though...

Done, new one it is. Recommendations?
I don't really want to wait on one through the mail, am I really saving that much over Lowe's, etc?

I changed one out Wed night. It took 20 minutes and the new one was $89. My advice is to get a model as close to yours as possible. I had a Kenmore and replaced it with a Kenmore.

My Kenmore I had lasted 11 years and I use the shite out of it. If this one last 11 years for $89 I'll be happy.

Garbage disposals stink. I swear I can smell them when I walk into people's kitchens and I won't have one because of that. People also never mount their dishwasher drain hose correctly and leave too much slack in it. I can smell the shite that gets stuck in those hoses too. Never understood why they aren't tied in below the p-trap somehow to keep this from happening. Pouring bleach in a disposal will only do so much for it IMO. I have a strong gag reflex though and am pretty sensitive to horrible smells like rotting garbage in a disoposal.

Why is it important to replace it with one similar in brand/make/model to what I have now?

So the mounting hardware will match up and you won't have to adjust any plumbing.

So the plumbing matches and you don't have to change anything.

The only choice for OT Ballers. All joking aside, get a full pony. You wont know how you lived without it.
