For a little levity: (I hope your vehicle is recovered)

quote:

The Dude: Also, my rug was stolen.
Younger Cop: The rug was in the car?
The Dude: No. It was here.
Younger Cop: [eager] Oh, separate incidents.
Maude Lebowski: [on answering machine] Jeffrey, this is Maude Lebowski. I need to see you. I'm the one who took your rug.
Younger Cop: Well. I guess we can close the file on that one.

So frickin' stupid to leave keys in a vehicle. Are you that goddamn lazy that you can't carry your keys back and froth from the house? There's not one decent excuse for this behavior. Just frickin' dumb! You deserve to have your shite stolen!

You're missing the point. If my garage is shut in the 1st place, there is no need to lock any car doors. All vehicles are secure at that point.

Nah, just statistically unlikely. I'm sure there is a pie chart somewhere that says why.

Don't pay these people any kind of mind, they run around here all day being internet bad asses. It makes them feel better I guess.

Sucks that your vehicle got stolen and I hope it is recovered.

Also, if you speak to an officer about taking your DNA I am almost certain they will tell you that it is simply to compare it to the DNA recovered from your truck. If they swab the door handle of your truck for DNA and then just send it off to the crime lab, they will not have anybody to compare it to. Since there is no suspect at the time it is compared to your DNA, and should also be compared to everyone elses DNA that could be on the area of the truck that was swabbed.

Your DNA was certainly not taken for no reason though. If a suspect ever arises in your case (for example the two black males who were seen walking in a nearby neighborhood are caught, they will take their DNA and compare it to that of your vehicle).

Again, the internet bad arse will chime in acting like they know what they are talking about, when they have no clue. If you would have refused the DNA then it would not have worked in your favor. Would have probably lowered your chances of ever having the person caught (not of finding your vehicle necessarily) tremendously.

Every man of the house should check that your house is secure before your family goes to bed. I make sure all doors are locked, garage closed, truck locked, lights are off inside, and porch lights on. My neighborhood is very safe, but you can't make the mistake of thinking its too safe. There are criminals everywhere and will go into the good, safe neighborhoods. It sucks this happened to you. I hope you recover your vehicle, and prosecute/execute those involved.

Does insurance still cover you if you are this negligent with securing your vehicle?

Theft is theft. Someone stole my property from my property. Both my auto ins and homeowners ins could potentially be involved.

I wouldn't be so sure about this. It's not uncommon for car insurance policies to have an exclusion for leaving your keys in the car.

Of course, you can lie about that to the insurer, but make sure you didn't tell the cops, as it's in the police report.

Lexus doesn't come with an onstar like function? Even if you don't subscribe to it, onstar can track your vehicle and shut it down.

OP stated that Link (Toyota's OnStar) couldn't help. Not sure why.

In our hood the cops will knock on your door after 11 pm and tell you to shut the garage.

I've spoken to them with a BAC of 12.8 or so several times explaining that me and the neighbor are still drinking

As the man of my house, I work as hard as horse frick, so I sometimes tend to pass out while the Mrs is watching Conan. The least she can do is double check the garage door. Hard arse.
