A friend said to start him with just the bar and Really stress form. Add weight repeat.

This is the right advice.

I plan to start my youngest out with a broomstick in a few years.

Seems like the right thread to ask this. When is a good age to start lifting? Does it really stunt growth?

Push ups
Pull ups
Body weight squats
Core work

All that's needed until junior high. Worked for Herschel.

No it doesn't stunt growth. Imo, the time to get a kid in the gym to start lifting somewhat serious is probably around 14 or 15 when they start getting a little Test running through them which is around puberty. Before that, just work on getting good form when the time comes and bodyweight stuff like push-ups, pull-ups, etc...

I've heard running sprints releases natural HGH in kids.

I was skeptical but........

Doc says he's at risk for obesity because his bmi is high

How much is an average weight for him to bench press. He's 5'10" 155 pounds. He has a lift-a-thon tomorrow and I'm curious what 8th grade kids should be lifting at this age.

If he's just started then probably 100 to 135 lbs. I wouldn't really worry about it right now. His maxes will skyrocket over the course of the next two years if he consistently lifts. You should emphasize a lot of body-strengths exercises - push up and pull ups do wonders.

Sounds like he's exceptionally strong for his age.

I was a "powerlifter" in Jr High (7th grade) and did around 165 to 185 on bench and 245-275 on squat. Weighed about 155.Don't quote me on that though. I remember working out with a plate and a 10 for bench and 2 plates for squats. That was working out not maxing out. Could have done more, just don't remember. I know I was one of the highest on squats.

They taught us a little past parallel on our squats.

135 is good for 7-8th grade. On our first day we had stations on sample weights and everyone tried what they could. 100 was the highest sample weight and we would see how many times we could do it.
