OT Dads - How old were your sons when you first took them fishing?

With the weather warming up, I'm trying to think of things to do with my son. He's almost three. I'm always looking for ideas to get us outdoors.

that's plenty old enough for a cane pole and cork

snoopy pole/Zebco + Life jacket + Sunscreen and let him rip

3 is old enough to head to a pond with a bucket of worms, crickets, and shiners along with yoohoos and lots of snacks. just let him run around playing with the bait and if he catches a fish, it'll be lagniappe.

2 or 3 but it only required 20 yds to do so. That was the earliest I can remember him holding a pole.

3-4 for both son and daughter.

How long should I really expect it to last? My son is extremely active, so I'm thinking I'll have to bring some other things for him to do while the line is cast.

Lifejacket and from some sort of fixed structure would be my recommendation.
I wouldn't judge someone for taking their kid fishing in a boat at that age, but it obviously has its own set of challenges.

I first used my infant son as fishing bait at about 14 months. I know that's earlier than usual, but he grew faster than most kids.

I was probably 3 or 4 my first time fishing with my dad. My son will be born in June and I can't wait to take him fishing in a few years.

If you cast it for him he could slowly reel it in if he is getting bored.
Also, a catfish farm or something in a park would help prevent long droughts of nothingness.

Your ability to be one of the first 3-4 replies is uncanny, and, frankly, a bit weird.

My son was voted MVP of his travelling fishing team at age 4.

I was about 3 or so. of course, I loathe fishing now, I would rather go shoe shopping with my wife than fish.

Really? Why's that?
I love it, but I'll admit that throwing a line and hoping for a bass is kind of boring. Fishing for other types is fun though.

4 or 5. Started at City Park and the lakefront. If you can put him on some fish it will last longer. My son had a blast messing around with ladyfish in the lake. He got a kick out of it when they jumped out of the water.
