40, 44, 46 days? What is commonly practiced in Louisiana? Sundays off? Seems like there are different ideas on the subject.

Wasn't Jesus in the desert or fasting for 40 days and 40 nights?

46 calendar days. Sundays don't count, hence 40 days of Lent.

Easter is on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the spring equinox, and Lent starts 40 days before that, not counting Sundays and Holy Days. So the total is 46 days.

Some Catholics will claim that Lent should be 40 days, so you get to take Sundays off. Real Catholics will agree with me in that those people should be excommunicated.

ETA: for the full moon part.

Many people do observe Sunday as part of their Lenten commitment.

Lent can last as long as you keep it in your heart.

Sundays are NOT part of Lent.

quote:

Q: Last year my Catholic co-workers and I disagreed over whether Sundays are considered part of Lent. Each year I give up sweets for Lent, but I have always understood that I could eat them on Sundays during Lent. Some of my co-workers disagree. With Lent starting soon, I would like to know who is right on this issue.

A: Technically, Sundays are not part of Lent. Although we celebrate them liturgically as part of Lent, the Lord's Day cannot be a day of fast and abstinence. Six weeks of Monday through Saturday gives you 36 days. If you add to them Ash Wednesday and the three days after it, you get the 40 days of Lent.

Some people may find it easier to "give up" something for the entire time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, but you are correct in saying that Sundays are not part of the 40 days.

Yeah, I always have. I'm just explaining the discrepancy in number of days.

Sun is always a day of celebration so they are excluded from Lent.
