My son is starting to look at colleges. We have family in Dallas and they've sent information from Dallas Baptist University. Do any of you know anything about the school? Quite frankly, I have never heard of it. Any special academic programs? How's the student body? Etc.

Thanks

Dallas Baptist University is a run of the mill Christian school. Obviously affiliated with the Baptists. Sports are Division II, with the notable exception of baseball, which competes at the Division I level.

They don't have a program that is really notable or special. Elementary Education is well respected, but I doubt your son is interested in that. Its a solid choice and they give good scholarships. Its definitely worth a look for a mid-20s ACT type student that wants something different than a state school.

Its certainly not Baylor, SMU or TCU, but its not a bad place. Some students do very well in smaller campus environments. IIRC, DBU has about 5,000 or so students. No Greek life. No football. But Dallas isn't a bad place to spend 4 years.

Thanks anc. He's starting to see the light that he most likely will not be accepted to Michigan. Right now, he's looking at University of Illinois, College of Wooster, Wheaton College, Dallas Baptist and Davidson College. He's not quite sure what degree path he wants to go or really what size of school he wants to attend. I'm a little cold on Illinois, but I'm not pressuring him in anyway.

why would someone be looking at Dallas Baptist if they're considering University of Illinois?

I'll say that I know one kid who goes there and he is top notch. I hear their baseball team is good too.

Wife's sister works there. She constantly sends packets and dvds from the school. He's really close with his cousins and enjoys spending time there. I'd like for him to go somewhere other than Illinois. It's a fine school, but the majority of his buddies are going there. I'd like for him to experience something different and meet new people.

If he's looking at schools of that caliber, he may as well see what UTD, UTA and UNT have to offer.

My nephew is starting at UT-Arlington. Do you know anything about that school? What about the University of Dallas?

I'm very familiar with Wheaton. That's a hidden gem just outside Chicago. I'd go to Wheaton over DBU if all things are equal. Davidson is a good place too.

Let me throw a couple of similar colleges in the mix: Belmont (Nashville), Campbell (just outside Raleigh, NC).

I have degrees from three SEC schools, have worked at two SEC schools and a smaller university. I am convinced that for most students, a smaller school works best for undergraduate, and the larger schools are better for graduate school. A huge notable exception to that theory is Engineering. There are very few smaller schools that offer Engineering programs. In fact, there is only one that I would consider - the small Presbyterian college - the University of Tulsa.

UD is a small Catholic school. Liberal arts college.

We like Wheaton a lot. My only concern is that it's too close to home. I just wouldn't want him spending a lot of his weekends at our house. I really want him to enjoy his college experience and meet new people/friends. Like I stated earlier, Illinois is a great school, but I'd hate for him to go down there and run around with all his high school buddies.

That's not a bad idea at all. Nashville is a tremendous city and it's only 6 or 7 hours drive (cheap direct flights as well). We've been down there a couple of times for Blackhawks-Predators games and he's loved the city. I actually wouldn't mind investing in a house or apartment facility in Nashville as well....Do you know anything about Belmont's programs?

I'll look into this as well. Thanks for the recommendation.

My wife went to UTA and hated it. They gave her a full ride though. Lots of foreign students. UGLY arse campus. Best thing going for it is that there is a Babes chicken house close to it.

DBU is out on 408 not exactly downtown. Don't know anything about it other than where its located.

I've known a few people who went to UNT and UTD and they seem to have more positive things to say about their experiences.
