What is your opinion on the state of modern "art" (visual art primarily). In your opinion has there been any of what could be described as a masterpiece created since lets say 1900?

To me the skills involved in creating visual art have by and large been lost, replaced by laziness. Critics and the art buying public gobble it up so you would think there is something to it, but i don't get it. Take this photograph for example, I'm sorry but i don't see $4.30 much less $4.3 million in it.

I think that people spend insane amounts of money on Picasso pieces not because they are inherently "good", but just for his name alone and the coolness factor of owning one.

I did study graphic design for three years prior to switching majors to finance, so I have experience around the artsy types. There are some legitimately talented people out there, but in my opinion they are overshadowed by a plethora of laziness.

I like realistic art. Landscape. But I'm biased since my dad paints.
That "weird" stuff does nothing for me

It isn't isolated too art, name a product and it happens.

Then you know why art commands such a high price. Hell, create a completely original font for me, I'll give you 10k.

Being easy to copy doesn't mean it is easy to create. At times, being original is priceless.

All I know is if it looks like something I can do it is not art.

I always thought expensive art was no different than than throwing in the hat and t-shirt for scalped tickets. Something illegal is going on under the table.

Ridiculous that those three are even worth that much. First one is just a bunch of fricking scribbles. The second is just like, what, solid colored rectangles? WTF!

I love modern and contemporary art but it is a ridiculous world. It's completely understandable if it's not your thing. I find art speak way worse than the pieces that people criticize here.

It's sometimes hard to understand without context, and you can blame curators and critics for that. I'm of the mind that talking about art shouldn't be so obscure. It turns off people from art in general.

My favorite thing to do when traveling is to visit museums.

I can follow it as far as impressionism. But abstract and whatever the call what came after that I can not see it.

Like someone said up-thread, it happens in a bunch of different fields. Heck, there are tons of threads on here about watches that cost tons of money just pretty much for the names on them. And things like shirts, etc. can vary widely in price for the same shirt with just the logos changed.

I have only one definition of art = If I can do it, it is not art.

Modern 'art' is a scam. It is the equivalent of a Khardasian reality show.

Hell - I didn't even notice that your OP was about a PHOTOGRAPH!

That photo is a piece of shite. Take the name off it and it would not be worth the paper it is printed on. Submit that photo to a contest and it would not draw a second look.

This is a prime example of purchasing an autograph instead of a demonstration of photographic - or artistic - talent.

“Skill without imagination is craftsmanship and gives us many useful objects such as wickerwork picnic baskets. Imagination without skill gives us modern art.”

I will say, I went to a modern art museum twice and found it revolting both times. Not that there aren't really cool ideas out there and I've seen them. The modern art museum in Europe was videos of topless women cutting the heads off chickens and shite. Made it about 15 minutes and left. Then went to the one in Chicago. There was cool stuff but the thing that stuck with me was the stock market tickers flashing pessimistic messages and that was just not anything I have patience for.
