So the speech she gave was silly, but the thing that bothered me the most was the timing of it.

She received a lifetime achievement award, a literally once in a lifetime event, and that is the speech she chose to give. She did not say thank you to one single individual in the whole thing. I find it hard to believe she got where she is all by herself. Just very off-putting.

Hollywood gonna Hollywood. You'd have thought they might tone down the smugness after what happened in November, but they clearly still live in their bubbles.

Once you realize that most of them are petulant, ungrateful children who live in the land of make believe, it's not hard to understand why they do what they do.

Tucker Carlson's take on her speech this morning on Fox was pretty good.

The South Park episode "Smug Alert" has never been more accurate

In the episode a giant cloud of smug from George Clooney's Oscar Speech causes chaos. Think of how big the smug cloud is from Meryl Streep.

They're so rattled that "ordinary" people don't give a shite about celebrity political views.

Just read your lines and act your part, bitch.

Same. Anyone surprised that most of the people in that room despise Donald Trump has been living under a rock. Im surprised she was the only one that gave a speech about it.

I can't get over how many people seem to care while simultaneously saying that no one should care what the opinion of an actor/actress is.

A couple of thoughts about this.

First, this is a woman who has been so celebrated and privileged her whole life that the Golden Globe Lifetime Achievement Award is basically meaningless. This is evidenced by her use of limited time to criticize the leadership of someone who hasn't even taken office yet as president, and by her lecturing of the press during that speech. The Hollywood Foreign Press gives the Golden Globes awards. So this is an appalling lack of respect for the Golden Globes, which apparently no one cares to mention.

Second, I'm always astounded by how much credibility people give actors, musical performers, and other artists regarding their political leanings. Most of the time, these are people wholly out of touch with the common man, and whose wealth and power allows them the security of promoting their ideals, publicly. Contrast that with with fast-food worker who gets fired for posting their controversial political idea on Facebook, or the professor who dares say anything that doesn't adhere to the liberal academic playbook. Though Streep is well-educated, she is the exception in the entertainment world. Most performers are very uneducated, and most have little more than a high school degree and/or a few years of college theater training. In short, I'm not going to give a shite what they have to say.

Solid contribution. Next time work a "melt" in there and it'll be post of year material.

She's a part of the hollywood elite. I don't know of any of them have any shred of common sense. It's why most people ignore what they say.

A Hollywood award show where somebody ridiculed and mocked republicans, shocking and as evidenced in this past election, utterly fricking meaningless.

She wasted it to make a political statement about a snapshot in time.

This is not Marlon Brando sending a Native American to accept an Oscar in the early 70's. The world has SO MUCH media that very little will resonate anymore. Only sincerity does. Not a contrived speech. Especially given by a master class actress. She IS such a good actress she could act through a speech praising Trump and the world would be "WTF??".

Trump calling her "overrated" is where he looks foolish and childish. Can he not find a better person to write his tweets? Would be a shite job with middle of the night phone calls. "In 10 minutes watch the video of Streep's speech and fire off a Tweet bashing her! Make me look good."
