Last year, an 11-year-old boy visited Normandy, France for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. The video below shows the kid doing something beautiful. He tried to visit the cemetery during the official D-Day celebration, but local police didn’t allow him to enter wearing his WWII-style uniform.

So the little boy took his American flag down to Omaha Beach and decided to plant it firmly in the sand. Standing alone, the kid stood firm and held his salute for over an hour and a half. Many tourists noticed him and got closer to say hi and take photographs. Veterans got closer too to talk to him. His dad captured everything on video.

as cool and touching as that is, it does piss me off when parents use their children as pawns to push a political message...

I don't care if his dad paid that Trumpeter to play taps. The feels from the image of that flag in the wind, that boy in uniform, and taps being played is tremendous. Hit me square in the heart.

The kid did good. Not many adults would have the strength or fortitude to stay there that long. That flag had to be killing him. Wind was really blowing out there. Same with his salute.

The dad bothers me though. It's pretty obvious he had his son act out crying. He might have cried at some point, the dad wanted it to be a good shot though.

The dad probably would've beat him if he didn't tough it out long enough and give the old man the attention he wanted.

Call me cynical but I didn't like that at all. That seemed very exploitative to me by being filmed, especially from a motivated second party. Unheralded actions are the most meaningful. this seems calculated.

I just don't see expressing your patriotism and thankfulness for what those guys did as a political message. It's an example that we need more of. Is there anything we can get permission for before the PC's have something to say about it?

As for as the "stolen valor" comment from a previous poster, that's the most absurd thing I've ever heard. In that case, take all the G.I. Joe's off the shelves and shite can every war movie ever made because they capitalized on bravery and lost lives. I rarely use the S word, but that is just plain stupid. Some people just have too much time on their hands.

God bless America. And I've been to Omaha Beach 3 times. You?

I don't think its political. This isn't about politics correctness. I think it's exploitative. Would he have done it if he wasn't being filmed? Would he have done it if it was in an empty field that had no one to witness his actions?

Oh for sure. Many people, especially the old people and redneck millenials sharing this on Facebook, do not realize what the dad is doing here. It was not an accident, he either knew they wouldn't let him in while in uniform ahead of time, or had an idea they wouldn't. It is a little strange they let him in for 2 straight days, and then didn't for the D-Day celebration.

Kid was still able to pull off an tremendous image. As I said. That moment on Omaha Beach, with Taps playing, the flag whipping & crackling, and his crisp salute was incredible.

Don't discount the idea that the kid wanted to do it on his own and the dad made it happen. I couldn't fault the dad if he brought along a camera. Why is there an automatic default to the worse possible scenario? We all have become so cynical. Sad.
