Look at that little priss in the bottom right. I'd punch a kid in the face for standing like that

Males those days did nothing but engage in fistacuffs and drink invigorating tonics. He'd probably kick your arse, though he would look quite effeminate in doing so.

Wait, is that the Henry Clay statue that's in Lafayette square?

Yes, they moved it from Canal to Lafayette Square. There is an explanation why it was moved on a plaque by the statute.

The Henry Clay statue was the "meeting point" for most public gatherings prior to it's removal.

That's not an omnibus, it's a street car, before they were electrified, they were horse or mule-drawn.

It is amazing the amount of labor we put into our architecture when we had free labor. Very beautiful.

I like how in old pictures like this, men always look like they're about to kick the photographer's arse.

Up until recent times, it was considered juvenile to smile in a photo. One had to look serious and important. Add the lack of modern dentistry and people simply didn't smile much.

It was also considered rude.

Who had free labor? Less than 2% of the population, so I've read and seen quoted for the last 30 years, owned slaves. The city didn't and most builders probably didn't either.

Ole Abe was known for his knowledge of the internet. Too bad he drowned in a submarine during WWII.
