Jan'85 and dec '89 both had lows of 9 iirc. Fell through a frozen pond trying to walk all the way across it. Never been so cold in my life.

January 1985 stands out. One of only times I can remember it going below 0 here in West Central Alabama. December 1983 was brutal too. We got a go cart for Christmas that year but it was so cold it hurt to ride it. Highs didn't get above the low 20s during that Christmas. December 1989 was a brutal too. Panama City, FL ended up with a white Christmas from that arctic outbreak.
P.S. My dad was an insurance agent and had a pretty crazy claim from the January 1985 outbreak. Pipe busted in a duplex with no one home. When the adjuster went to check it out the water on the floors of the room had frozen solid.

Jan/85. There was ice drifts coming down the Mississippi River big time. The cold started a couple days before Christmas and lasted till around the 5th of Jan.

13. It wasn't huge. Just broke ice til I could touch bottom and climbed/pulled myself out then hauled arse home and just sat in steaming hot bath. Remember like it was yesterday. Never have tried it again since then

'85 the Red River in Shreveport froze over and you could walk out on it.

I remember the LSU v. ILL Sugar Bowl when they closed some roads and bridges because of ice. I was checking out of the hotel the next morning and the Illinois fans were laughing that they were "closing" New Orleans because there was frost on windows

If I remember correctly it got down to 12 degrees one Christmas in Mandeville in '87. I was under my dad's house shutting off the water because of broken water pipes. It did not get above freezing for three days and the Madisonville rice fields were frozen solid. Me and a buddy of mind took his uncle's air boat out to the frozen rice fields and had a blast skimming across the ice at 70 mph.

this it for me, although I thought it was 1990. REgardless, this was insane. A number of the refineries and chemical plants in SW La. could not maintain operations; they just weren't built for the sustained temps in the teens that we had just 35 miles or so from the Gulf Coast. It ... was ... COLD!

Dec 1989. Senior in high school and the duck hunting was off the hook. Too bad the limit was just 3 birds...... 
Every time I am back in the Mecca over the holidays and watch the weather and the record low temps for that week are still 1989, I have visions of Mallards cupping up into the decoys.

That is about the coldest one I remember. Put snow on the ground in the Houma area. Froze up ponds in the marsh and boats were breaking ice in the bayous.
