Then why not leave the union? I understand a few places require union membership, but even in those places, if everyone left the union or refused to pay for it, the union would be forced to shut down or stop operating in that area

It may come to that. I'm sure contractors of the region are mobilizing.

Happened to my Dad in the 80's. After watching him/them strike on and off for years. All were dropped and came back as contractors. People forget how fragile oil jobs are.

Seems like it's either a requirement or you just succumb to the pressure or you're too young to know any better

It's a cycle which will be hard to overcome

I'm not Union but I do work in a union facility

So every member or every Union across all types of industries are automatically trash?

Seems a little closed minded

I know a safety guy what has worked at a few plants. Said that the amount of stupidity he has to deal with on a daily basis is not only outrageous, but downright dangerous that it is so hard for him to kick people out of the plant.

They'll do shite like hit themselves in the hand with a hammer and blame it on him because there were no warning signs not to hit yourself with a hammer. Then, they get paid leave, only to come back and do dumb shite again.

As far as USW guys being replaced by outside contractors, he loves it because they can be held to a much more stringent standard and can be fired on the spot. The incompetent and unsafe union guys will continue to do the same job, or will be moved to another job in the plant without ever being fired

The workers should form some kind of organization, a union perhaps, to protect them from these evil unions that have taken control.

oil was being artificially held at well over market price. Now it's down to a level much closer to market price. They better adjust to reality.
And I don't care that they're "US Steel workers contracted to oil companies" or whatever BS some of y'all are arguing for. These are spoiled workers who should be fired for what they're doing. I hope scabs come take their jobs permanently

It wasn't being artificially held high. It was always a market and the high prices weren't inflated. Production increased, demand stayed the same, prices dropped.

They should organize themselves and all at once up and quit the Union. Then vote or something to have someone speak for the whole of them so that they don't get pushed out. Maybe make that person a full time rep for them, collect dues so that the head of the movement can focus on the de-unionized's best interest without having to work.

Then they will have the power over the plant and the union they just broke from!

Be warned, the people in the O and G field will be here soon to tell you fat, lazy, incompetent workers only exist in the public sector.
