The transponder shows the planes info to the tower? Flight number and other vitals? Alt, speed, etc?

With it off they have no idea where the plane is besides radar?

It shows their info to everyone with a IFF receiver. Shows Position, Altitude, Speed, Mode/Code (which for aircraft its mode 3 followed by their 4 digit code).

They could have another way, Im just not aware of it. I know thats the primary way to ID airplanes.

This is what transponders will do, among other things.

They are never going to find this thing. The collective world is going to be left with the biggest case of blueballs ever courtesy of the Malaysian government.

I wouldn't rule out the plane being here.

You may know it as Myanmar, but it will always be Burma to me

Anyone can monitor ads-b transmissions with a $20 usb rtlsdr dongle. Really neat stuff.

If they never find the plane, it would and should go down as one of the biggest conspiracy theory plots.

There was no question in there. :)

I was just saying that transponder traffic can be monitored from overhead aircraft with a very cheap piece of computer equipment.

Transponders are part of the secondary radar system. Primary radar has limits and outside ATC beacon radar, the transponder is the source of tracking. The transponder shows altitude. There were some links posted, but probably buried in this thread.

Wonder how NextGen will affect aircraft monitoring?

While the landing of the plane wasn't involved....the plot device of a bomb (and nerve gas) on a plane with passengers, and potentially shooting it down, was used in executive decision
