Caught one in my garage by accident a few years ago, I was gonna try to make a pet out of it,but it died after 1 night.

we had one that nested at the top of a column of our house in New Roads back when I was a kid, right outside my BR window. Imagine my 8-yr-old arse reacting to hearing his hooting and seeing his set of glowing white eyes thru my window, alone in the dark...upstairs in a big, old house in my bed.

"FUKKING DAAAAAAAAADEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"

I left a trail of tee tee all the way down the stairs.

This was more than likely a great horned owl based of the description you have provided. They are known to terrorize rural youth.

Screech owls do the terrorizing. As a kid I had dropped my shotgun and ran halfway back to the house before I realized something wasn't chasing me before daylight one winter morning in 1974 or thereabouts

Code of Federal Falconry regulations

Teague on the outdoor board is the expert on all of this.

Good luck they are vicious rat killing machines and sound like Satan when they hiss clack and bob their heads. Fun bird to work with

I will in the future.

This isn't a bad deal. I'll need to conduct research on the rodenticides.

Climbing into a deer stand a few years ago, as soon as I opened the door one of those came right at me, talons out, grazed my head and flew off. I'm still not sure how I stayed on the ladder. There were two young ones still inside, mean little bastards, and it was like a scene from animal hell of bones and carcasses and owl shite. It smelled great too.

I almost smashed one with the truck yesterday. Bastard landed on the road right in front of me and then went 0-60 in about 72 seconds. He couldn't even get out of his own way.

I don't know why you would want to own a bird of prey (unless they're incapable of living in the wild/you're rehabilitating them). Seems like a dick move. I've always envied their seeming freedom to soar above it all.

They are heavily protected. A local business had one hanging out near their property. It would attack customers. The trapper they hired couldn't touch it until a federal permit was obtained. It was caught within a few hours of putting the trap out on evening.
