O-T electricians, need advise to replace my breaker box.

Outdoor piece of shite Federal Pacific, 100 amp, with a 3 phase AC unit tied into it.
Electrician tells me I have two choices, go with a better brand 3 phase box (he uses Siemens) and keep my current AC unit, or go regular 200 amp box and change out my AC unit, which seems expensive.
Current POS box has breakers tripping regularly.
TIA.

It's this at your house ?
If so, you have three phase at your house? That's odd

Granted I only know enough about electricity to get me in trouble, but the above doesn't make sense, to me anyway.

Is this for a house or business? I've never heard of a 3 phase residential HVAC Unit.
If this is true, I would switch out the HVAC.

Whatever you do, don't let him doubletap the neutrals lol

Single phase is two hots and a neutral
Three phase is three hots and a neutral
Three phase is three hots and a neutral

quote:I've got a 3 phase main breaker box, and a line from the box feeding the AC unit through another small triple fuse box. The main breaker for the house is 100 amps. It's an older home, electrician said many of the homes in this neighborhood have the same.
so you have a single 100amp as the main I am assuming. Is it the main that is tripping or the 50 amp breaker for the AC unit?
No problem with the AC breaker tripping, just others in the box. (15 and 20 amp breakers)

okay, so when the AC is under load, other non affiliated breakers are tipping but not the 100amp main?
Odd. I'm sure the long term fix would be a new 125amp panel but not a new AC call a different guy out there.

No Nap, it's definitely a 3 phase box. Have been told by 2 different electricians.
The single 15 and 20 amp breakers in the main box are tripping.

three phase is so complicated it's more than three hots and a neutral, yet it isn't. It's more for having more consistent power than higher power.
While normal power cycles 60 times a second, three phase is made so that it doesn't really cycle, and the differences in use are more about the frequency rather than the power.
Complicated shite that most of us never have to worry about. Just that it's better for low voltages over long times like office lighting and machinery.
quote:
3-phase power has 3 distinct wave cycles that overlap. Each phase reaches its peak 120 degrees apart from the others so the level of power supplied remains consistent.
quote:
With the wave form of single-phase power, when the wave passes through zero, the power supplied at that moment is zero. In the U.S., the wave cycles 60 times per second.

From what I gather, the main breaker for the house is 100 amp, and there's a 50 amp 3 phase breaker feeding the AC unit.
Sound plausible?

Sounds like AC is 3 phase. 10 and 20a breakers tripping sound like a bad buss bar.

If you have three wires then it's two phase, if you have four wires then it's three phase.
Let me correct myself, I just read on the box and it's a 150 amp box and a 30 amp breaker feeding the AC unit.
