This Black Life Matters

quote:

Retired black tennis star James Blake, in an NYPD double-fault, was slammed to a Manhattan sidewalk and handcuffed by a white cop in a brutal case of mistaken identity.

The 35-year-old Blake, once ranked No. 4 in the world, suffered a cut to his left elbow and bruises to his left leg as five plainclothes cops eventually held him for 15 minutes Wednesday outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

“It was definitely scary and definitely crazy,” Blake told the Daily News. “In my mind there’s probably a race factor involved, but no matter what there’s no reason for anybody to do that to anybody.”

quote:

Blake, on his way to make a corporate appearance for Time Warner Cable at the U.S. Open, said none of white cops identified themselves, including the officer who charged straight at him and bounced him off the E. 42nd St. concrete around noon.

“Don’t say a word,” snapped the officer, who Blake said was not wearing a badge.

quote:

Blake — whose right eye appeared red hours later at the Midtown hotel — was only turned loose when a former cop recognized the man in cuffs and alerted the arresting officers, a police source said.

“That is James Blake, the tennis player,” the NYPD retiree told them.

The first cop involved never apologized to Blake for the physical thumping or the subsequent cuffing, the ex-player recounted.

James Blake was basically assaulted for being black and misidentified by a witness. He was suspected of credit card fraud, not a violent crime. He was roughed up by five plain clothes police officers who did not announce who they were or what their motive was.

For those that don't know, James Blake graduated from Harvard.

Yeah that was a bit unnecessary.

But nothing will happen to those officers.

I side with the cops often in these stories because someone usually commits a felony first.

In this case, Frick them, they are wrong all day. Blake handled it very well.

Soooo someone gets robbed, the cops say who did it? Victim says that's the guy right there!!!! Cops are supposed to casually approach and ask him nicely?

Don't get me wrong, Cops still a douche and prob was too rough, but don't turn it into yet another race story. He only did it because I'm black not because the witness said it was me!!!

He's not your average athlete.

Also, he was ranked #4 in the world and was the best American tennis player for a couple of years=STAR

fricking understatement if there ever was one. That was completely unnecessary and over the top. Zero excuse for that type of behavior under the circumstances.

Of course nothing will happen to them.

Well if I believe the OP, then he was accused of credit card fraud, which is not a violent crime. Let's take his race out of the picture all together. How can you justify using that type of force on a man who is just walking who you have no reason to suspect is an imminent danger.

This scenario seems to play out more and more. In our own backyard in NOLA we've seen this same thing, a non-uniformed officer coming at a suspect aggressively and then acting surprised that the suspect either tries to bolt or defend themselves.

What would most reasonable people do in that case? A guy runs up on you in street clothes, lays hands on you, and then after the fact mentions he's a LEO. Are most people not going to try and at least protect themselves at first, if they can...until they are sure he is who he finally says he is?

Blake seemingly didn't even do this, but this trend of officers doing this is absolutely going to get one of them killed, and we'll have to hear about what a thug the suspect was for busting up a cop who laid hands on them without being in uniform and without identifying themselves.

He should have got on the ground once the cop began charging him and put his hands up. He needs to be thankful he didn't get tased, choked or worse. Comply or die. Its the American Way.

No, he was assaulted b/c he was misidentified by a witness. Him being black has nothing to do with this other than the fact that the witness fingered the wrong black man.

Is that supposed to be evidence that he wasn't committing a crime at the time?

Most of the time, if a cop gets the "wrong guy" then they were probably doing some other crime that they needed to be arrested for. The article never said that this Blake character wasn't involved in criminal activity at the time of the arrest.

Several cases out there of police doing no knock raids and the home owners trying to defend themselves kill the cop thinking it was some criminal breaking into the home.

Generally the home owner is arrested...

What does this have to do with racism? These cops are complete morons. But was the original suspect a white guy and they tackled the first black guy they saw, because they are racists and hate black people? Where is the racism?

It's probably because of all those Confederate statues around NYC. We need to send Mitch up there to show those folks how to really create peace.
