Nutella in the USA - did anybody grow up with it in their home?

As a kid growing up, the only time I ever experienced Nutella was when my parents brought some souvenirs from their trip to London home for me in the mid 1980's. Wheatabix and Nutella and a red double-decker bus toy are the things I remember. Nutella was this magical, chocolatey gooey WAY BETTER THAN PEANUT BUTTER treat that was in and out of my life in a blink. Never had it again until I was 14 or so and finally went abroad myself for the first time.

I don't understand why Nutella isn't so popular in the USA. It's amazing. Did anybody here (presumably most of us grew up in the Southeast or Louisiana in particular) have Nutella as part of their childhood?

I'm still single and don't have kids so I'm curious if 5-10 year olds today have grown to love it and I'm just unaware? Or is it still this mostly-European curiosity that mainstream America isn't into?

It went mainstream here about 6 years ago. Nutella is everywhere now.

I don't really care for it. Though, I probably would have loved it as a kid.

BTW, we have a food board.

Personally, I don't understand the European fascination with hazelnuts. They seem like they're in every goddamned thing they consume. I'd be more into just a straight up spreadable chocolate.

It's so popular that even Hershey decided to copy it.

It's chocolate hazelnut frosting.

I really hope it doesn't become a breakfast staple. Not like our resident hamplanets need any more opportunities to stuff their faces with shite food.

Fair enough - but I still maintain that in European and Asian cities you see it on every HHonors breakfast buffet you go to. But never in America. None of the Hilton properties in Chicago or Minneapolis or Detroit have it.

Like I said, no kids so I don't have a pulse on that aspect of life.

I remember a kid in middle school eating nutella everyday at lunch. This was probably in 1998-99ish. Nutella has definitely gotten big over the last few years. we have the nutella to go packs in our house all the time.

Nutella is for hipsters.

Real anti-hipsters eat Vegemite

But did anybody here in their 30's or 20's have it as a kid? I'm guessing it wasn't widely available in the USA (unless you lived in San Fran or NYC or something) until the 2000's?

I was in Europe about 20 years ago and discovered Nutella. I thought that stuff was nectar of the gods. Would occasionally see it at the grocery stire when I got back. No one back home really knew what it was.

You apparently haven't banged any females in the last 6 or so years. Nutella is extremely popular with kids and early 20s females.

It was first introduced along the northeastern states in 1983. It has really taken over within the last 10 years down in the south. Every grocery store has it and commercials use to run constantantly on tv. Now Hershey advertised more it seems. Nutella is good. Never tried Hershey's.
