I have a parent that is reaching the age that they will now need full time care. Does the OT know any go to nursing homes or possible nursing homes to definitely avoid?
BTW, I am in Baton Rouge.

If BR is like any other city, you'll hear plenty of complaints about all nursing homes.

Just be aware that there are multiple levels of "nursing" homes, depending on level of care needed

Will they be private pay or not?
If private pay find a private pay only facility, they tend to be somewhat better.
Just prepare yourself, no one is going to take care of your parent the way you think they should be taken care of.
Good luck

I would rather die than go into a nursing home. I would make it my dying wish that my wife would never be in one either if I were gone.

My Dad has been in two assisted living facilities. The first was run the Catholic Church, and the current one is private owned. The Catholic one looked great on the surface, but as with that religion is was all about the $ coming in not so much the care. The current one is smaller, and much more hands on. There are both on the northshore.

Number one fear is ending up in some type of care.

Hopefully we will get some automated nurses of the future. That way, we dont get abused by the staff.

Is she private pay or is she trying to get on Medicaid? Medicaid is a five year look back and if you haven’t been preparing for it, you are gonna get screwed.

I know a good place called Green Grove, but it’s a Retirement Community.

Went through this with both parents, prayers sent, it’s a long, sad goodbye but you owe it to them to see them through the final leg of the journey.

My dad passed last Thursday at home with Alzheimers. It was awful. We considered placing him right before the end.

There are no good choices for institutional care. Only the best of bad choices. I am sorry you are going through this.

I faced this same situation in the 2019. I had taken care of my Dad for years but his health got to the point that I couldn't give him the care he needed. This was my biggest fear and it happened. You are doing a wise thing by getting a jump on this. Take the time and tour many facilities ask a ton of questions. Find the facebook site for the different facilities. Ask questions of the residents families. Be prepared to hear everything good and bad you will hear both. Take both with a grain of salt. Ask your parents doctor what facility they recommend or which ones to avoid. Most of these facilities will encourage you to switch your parents primary care over to the doctor or doctors that regularly visit their facility. This is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong answer to this but it does make a bit easier with a parent who has many issues to have a doctor that is in and out of that particular facility regularly. The thing with these places is they are no better than the staff and all of these places are having serious staffing issues. My dad passed back in feb. overall I was happy with the care he got in there but their will be things you don't like. Also be prepared for so bad days once your parent enters the home. My Dad went through a bad period for about the first 2 months or so. But once he got adjusted he was doing better than he did for several years before he went in there.

Nursing home
That's actually a specific industry term that might not mean what you think it does. What actual level of care do you need for your parent?

10+ year Senior Living vet here.

If financially able, check out Assisted Living first. Get connected with the best Home Health/Palliative Care/Hospice based on qualifiers. Look for any Long-Term Care policy in place you may not know about, VA Aid & Attendance if veteran. Learn yourself on tax deductibility for Assisted Living.

Contact A Place For Mom or Caring.com, they can assist with referrals based on facility reviews and per need/budget, as well as schedule tours for you.

Understand staffing model of places you visit. How many care staff? How many people are they responsible for?
