In the early nineties, Subaru was in trouble. The cars were fine. They ran well enough. But sales had been slumping for years. Subaru was up against giants like Toyota and Nissan. And it was losing. It needed a way to stand out.

Subaru hired a new ad agency, to figure out who was buying their cars. The ad firm went out to Northampton, Massachusetts—a hotspot for Subaru sales, according to their research. A group of Subaru owners filed into a little room in a shopping mall to answer a few questions, and the researchers noticed something right away. All of them were women and many identified as lesbian.

This wasn't a time of tolerance for LGBT Americans. It was the era of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. In a few years, Bill Clinton would sign the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred same sex couples from being recognized as spouses. And yet, Subaru executives signed off on ads aimed at lesbian consumers. They did it in very precise, clever ways that became a template for many of the ad campaigns you see today... if you know how to look for it.

It is about a 20 minute piece, but it is interesting.

Either lesbians prefer Subarus, or driving a Subaru turns a woman into a lesbian.

Don't even care. They're great cars, and if they ever put a third row in their vehicles, my next purchase will be a Subaru.

There's some interesting stuff on NPR but I can't stand and won't abide the smug & smarmy institutional attitude there in toto.

Hipster Radio.

Thanks for the tip. I will listen. Planet Money puts outs good shows.

They have a good series recently on how oil is produced, transported, refined, used in products, etc. Very educational. They included an interesting visit with the guy who developed the fracking technique.

I like that they keep the pieces to about 20 minutes. Too many podcasters think they need to fill an hour. No.

Anyone else having trouble downloading Planet Money podcasts on itunes lately? Keep getting a message saying it's temporarily unavailable. Haven't been able to download since the oil series.

So many people up here drive them - even straight dudes. It's hard to take them seriously, although I will admit that it was a brilliant strategy by Subaru

I heard it this morning on the drive in to work. I always joked that it was a lesbian car, but never knew they actually marketed to them. Well done.

I always wondered why anyone would buy an all wheel drive 2 door hatchback, until I hitched a ride in one down a mountain in Oregon when I got my rental car stuck during a snow storm trying to go skiing.
