what traits should i looks for to pick out the best granite for counter tops? would you pick out any other rocks before granite for that purpose?

Excellent question.

It depends on what colors you like and other factors. I prefer pegmatitic granite because you can see all the minerals and they are huge so there's no set mixed pattern. It's great to stare at. I also like gneiss.

Here's lame names...

You have to ask for the rock type, not the lame names.

how much does chert suck?

Chert is a crystalline sedimentary rock that is so condensed that it cannot conduct fluids...so it doesn't.

I have gone caving in a cave with a tight crawl space over chert, and that hurt a lot...so that sucked.

Is it true that there are only two types of rocks?

1. Rocks that you throw.

2. Rocks that you get hit with.

The banding is fairly thick, not in thin layers like I've seen in gneissic banding. I've seen bands that were from 1 to maybe 5-6 inches thick.

I'm not sure the Pikes Peak batholith goes that far south but maybe it does. Or it could be a different but similar batholith.

PP granite is approx. 1 billion years old. Not that that has anything to do with anything, I just find that fact interesting.

what's the difference between a shell and a rock?

A shell is biomineralized by a living organism.

A rock can be made of shells if they are adhered together. With living things no longer inside them.

what kind of rocks are in Mandeville High's sophomore parking lot?

I used to park there because it was easier to get out...

That's that dark limestone quarried from somewhere in New York/Ohio area.

Sometimes I find a rocks in my yard with marks on them. How can I be sure whether or not it's a fossil?

Fossils are remains of life. Most life has two things: Symmetry and Repetition. If you see both of those, then it may be a fossil.

If all else fails: Take a picture and show me!
