Notorious NOLA cop "Flat top" (Melvin Williams) convicted in beating death
He is allegedly feared for beat downs and planting drugs in NOLA.
The defense even called in Dr. Michael Baden the pathologist from HBO's Autopsy show to dispute. They were still found guilty on all counts. The evidence must have been overwhelming.

Good riddance to another bad one off the streets of NOLA

New Orleans police officers Melvin Williams and Matthew Dean Moore were convicted on all counts by a federal jury this morning in the July 2005 beating death of Treme handyman Raymond Robair.

Michael DeMocker, The Times-Picayune
Patrice Leflore, left, niece of Raymond Robair, wipes away tears with other family members after a New Orleans jury found two police officers guilty in charges arising from his death in 2005.
U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon immediately revoked bond for both men and ordered them taken into the custody of federal marshals.
Williams faces a maximum of life in prison. Moore faces a maximum of 25 years in prison. Sentencing has been set for July 14.

These guys dropped him off at Charity, did not report their names to the ER staff, which is normal procedure. They did not call the drop off in to the dispatch at NOPD. They also returned several minutes later and told them they found crack in the back of the car. Of course, they never took the crack with them to use as evidence that they caught him with drugs. Many stories about it on NOLA.com

The officers allegedly said they had found the unknown man down on the ground, under a bridge, and that he was comatose because of a likely drug overdose. Neither officer gave any indication that Robair could have been beaten, could have fallen, or suffered any type of trauma, nurse Michelle Simon testified. Hospital staffers indicated that Robair was not immediately sent to the trauma unit because of the allegedly misleading details provided by officers, as well as the absence of any major outward signs of trauma to his body.
With Robair in grave condition, Sigillito called the NOPD and requested the officers who dropped off Robair return to the hospital. Sigillito said it appeared Robair had been severely beaten, his death a possible homicide, according to records of the call. Sigillito testified that he believed the NOPD would conduct an investigation.
A police dispatcher broadcast the request, though Williams and Moore, who used his radio within minutes of the broadcast, never responded.

Come on this guy looks stable. I'm sure he acted properly and never used unnecessary force

That's not even flat top. He was a relative rookie. He got the lesser of the sentence.

If he did it, and the jury's determination certainly indicates he did, frick him. He should rot in jail. Most of us have never had to deal with the impossibility of dealing with oppressive statist actions. It's quite dehumanizing.

Dean Moore is a former professional NHL player. He's also one of the best trained and well respected officers I've encountered, meticulous about his work. He wasn't alleged to have taken part in the beating.

FWIW, the crackheads called by the government aren't exactly the most reliable witnesses IMO. When this incident first happened, 2 of what later became the government's witnesses said that "ponytail," Melvin Williams' partner, was also on the scene and was involved in the beating.....until it was learned that she was actually on her honeymoon in Hawaii at the time of the incident.

I'm well aware of Melvin's reputation, but I've also been on the investigating end of several complaints by citizens that ended up being nothing but lies and rumor after receipt of completely contradictory video evidence. I won't pretend like I know what happened here. The jury's verdict is the jury's verdict.

His conduct at the hospital, immediately after, and the written report on the incident seem to not fit this description.

As I said, I don't pretend to know what happened. For being allegedly punched, kicked, and beaten with an asp to the point of death, it sure seems strange to me that he had no signs of physical trauma to trained medical personnel.

Upon closer examination by a physician, he did have signs. That is why they celled the cops back to the hospital. The cops did not respond to that call.

Another article says the Moore guy was just 77 days out of academy. Damn. Not saying if it's true that he isn't at fault, but you have to think about what kind of pressure he was under to follow orders of a 20 year veteran.

I thought the same thing. No excuse, but I do agree with the pressure of following the orders of, allegedly, one of the most notorious thug cops who was also a longstanding veteran

Sounds like Moore didn't watch Training Day or Narc.

I have only read about this case recently and do not claim to be in the know on the facts. I do know when I lived in New Orleans and followed the Brass that Dean Moore was one of if not the most popular player on the team. He did a lot of community stuff with children. Met him at the Fox and the Hound one evening and had the opportunity to talk with him over a few beers and from what I know of the man, I would say this is way out of character. If it did go down the way it looks, I could not imagine the preasure he was under with a veteran cop like Williams.
