On Tuesday the group gave details about how $2 million of the $16 million in toll money is spent on projects that have nothing to do with the Causeway.

“Money goes to Orleans Parish,” Franzo said. “It goes to taking care of the Huey P. Long Bridge, and it goes to seven of the Lake Pontchartrain basin parishes.”

The group says $1.6 million a year goes to fund the Huey P., $25,000 go to the New Orleans Police Department and another $25,000 goes to the New Orleans Recreation Department.

Siphoning money away from the Causeway bridge fuels the fire of residents and the Mandeville mayor, who wants the tolls to remain the same.

“The concern with the increase is that a lot of the money going to other parishes that St. Tammany residents are paying, and I think that some of that needs to be resolved before we start saying let's increase the payments more on St. Tammany commuters,” said Mayor Donald Villere.

That's typical of government spending. A significant amount ends up in the hands of those with nothing to do with the cause for the collections.

If they want to raise tolls then take that $2 million and don't give it away. then if you need money consider a toll hike.

I am heartily opposed to the way the Causeway spends money and who they spend it with, but I was OK with that.

In fog conditions it is very helpful to know there is an accident at 13.8, not just MM 13.

They are far more of a necessity than those useless lighting projects.

My hunch is that Carleton and company will quickly give up the fight.

They don't want to answer a bunch of questions about how they spend money. I mean, it is theirs and it belongs to them.

Yeah, not having .1 mile markers on a bridge with no shoulder would be dumb.

I am not opposed to an extra dollar for safety.

I am, however opposed to any additional monies going for something that is not relevant to the Causeway commute across the lake.

Is the only to raise the rails the way they are trying to do?

I'm no construction guy, but $100M seems like a ton.

That's $4M per mile.

ETA: That # may have included the runoff lanes, I'm not sure...

What, you think Jefferson Parish residents can afford the upkeep on their bridges?

I'm watching the live feed and one of the citizens polled the commission on which of the members actually live on the Northshore....only one did. I guess that's why money gets directed to the Southern parishes.

The legislature requires the causeway to fund the Huey P. That's out of their control.

The money to NORD is a different story.

Lol at the north shore people getting butt hurt. There is a solution... Stay over there. Or take 10/55

Now that this has passed did they say they would lower the toll back down when the bond is paid off!
