What about Mountain Hardware? Still relevant?

Sure, but owned by Columbia. Quality has declined according to most,

I don't think they have declined. It's still MH people designing/testing their gear and not the Columbia folks.

Gore Tex sucks. It's a marketing phenomenon.

Carry on.

the founder of the North Face (Doug Thomkins) was married to a co-founder of Patagonia (Kristine Wear) until the former's death last year.

She wasn't a co-founder. Kristine worked for Chouinard under Chouinard Equipment and basically ran his business while he was out climbing. She eventually became CEO after it was Patagonia.

They were all a close knit climbing group that pioneered the sport and started clothing and equipment companies. Yvon Chouinard(Patagonia), Tom Frost(Black Diamond which was initially Chouinard Equipment), Royal Robbins(Royal Robbins). There's a great documentary about it all which focuses on their climbing.

True!

On black Friday, there was a line to get into the montclair soho store and a big protest outside of Canada Goose store. Seems every 3rd person in NYC has a Canada Goose jacket.

Apparently there is a lot of hostility towards French Canadians in New York and a lot of love towards the pure French. Are they selling Canada Goose yet at Marshalls or Stein Mart?

Good shite for non-gapers. Patagonia also makes quality shite. North Face isn't worth a damn thing other than making those Denali jackets for college frat bros

Fleece is fleece bro. Patagonia is nice but overpriced. Marmot makes decent sleeping bags and the precip is a classic but nothing revolutionary. North face is a little lower quality since the VF acquisition but for casual wear it's all the same.

I haven't bought any "new" MH stuff in probably 4 years. I did own a post-Columbia tent that was really sloppy though. I know they've had quality control issues with some of their lower priced shells (mainly bizarre fits).

Maybe so, but this particular protest was more about the harming animals for their feathers.

You can't fault them for that. It was and still is a great business decision, but like all trends something else is going to replace the North Face trend. And it appears Patagonia will do just that.

You should really read "Let My People Go Surfing" to understand how far from the truth this is about Patagonia.

Doug and Susie Tompkins sold North Face in order to have the funds to create a beautiful preserve in Argentina.

Yvon Chiounard thought a number of times about going mainstream but has decided he can make more of an impact by staying in control.

Patagonia is expensive because the materials and processes they use are believed to be by Yvon the best available. Perhaps when he dies, there will be a shift, but his vision is pretty well ingrained in the corporate culture.

Patagonia started with Chouinard selling rock climbing hooks out of the trunk of his car

Patagonia is beyond hipster...it's super dirty, disgusting pot smoking hippy. dude was an outdoor socialist hippy before there was such a thing

it's an unbelievable success story. chouinard had natural business instincts.

In no way does Gore Tex "suck." Gore tex is overkill for most applications, and it has competitors in proprietary synthetics (many of which are dying off because they're as/more expensive than GTX).

Exactly why the frat bros are getting their money out of the $200 Denali jackets
I'm being a hater but I was once one of those dudes.

I have a Marmot base layer, bag, puffy, and can say they make quality gear. I don't think anyone is saying that about North Face these days

Chouinard is a role model and hell of an environmentalist. "Let My People Go Surfing" is an awesome read

Fair enough on the business side of it. I think "co-founder" (which I did use) comes from the corporate entity side - when they transitioned from Chouniard to Patagonia, Inc.

I don't care for his politics and activism, but it is a rarity to have such a gross hippy with such a keen business instinct. it's one of the more amazing success stories.

the one thing that people who achieve that level of success in business have is energy and enthusiasm. he's old as shite...and i'm not sure about now, but he was still doing crazy outdoor shite in his old age at one point.

as for the product...I can't specify what my job is, but I can tell you that for fleece zip ups and shite, you're overpaying.

It absolutely does suck. Just like all the rest of the waterproof "breathable" fabrics. The marketing from Gore is comical.

This is a good summary
