She wasn't a co-founder. Kristine worked for Chouinard under Chouinard Equipment and basically ran his business while he was out climbing. She eventually became CEO after it was Patagonia.
They were all a close knit climbing group that pioneered the sport and started clothing and equipment companies. Yvon Chouinard(Patagonia), Tom Frost(Black Diamond which was initially Chouinard Equipment), Royal Robbins(Royal Robbins). There's a great documentary about it all which focuses on their climbing.

Fleece is fleece bro. Patagonia is nice but overpriced. Marmot makes decent sleeping bags and the precip is a classic but nothing revolutionary. North face is a little lower quality since the VF acquisition but for casual wear it's all the same.

I haven't bought any "new" MH stuff in probably 4 years. I did own a post-Columbia tent that was really sloppy though. I know they've had quality control issues with some of their lower priced shells (mainly bizarre fits).

You should really read "Let My People Go Surfing" to understand how far from the truth this is about Patagonia.
Doug and Susie Tompkins sold North Face in order to have the funds to create a beautiful preserve in Argentina.
Yvon Chiounard thought a number of times about going mainstream but has decided he can make more of an impact by staying in control.
Patagonia is expensive because the materials and processes they use are believed to be by Yvon the best available. Perhaps when he dies, there will be a shift, but his vision is pretty well ingrained in the corporate culture.

In no way does Gore Tex "suck." Gore tex is overkill for most applications, and it has competitors in proprietary synthetics (many of which are dying off because they're as/more expensive than GTX).

Fair enough on the business side of it. I think "co-founder" (which I did use) comes from the corporate entity side - when they transitioned from Chouniard to Patagonia, Inc.

I don't care for his politics and activism, but it is a rarity to have such a gross hippy with such a keen business instinct. it's one of the more amazing success stories.
the one thing that people who achieve that level of success in business have is energy and enthusiasm. he's old as shite...and i'm not sure about now, but he was still doing crazy outdoor shite in his old age at one point.
as for the product...I can't specify what my job is, but I can tell you that for fleece zip ups and shite, you're overpaying.
