North Face use to be the preferred quality outdoor brand until is was bought out by Vanity Fair and started popping up in every chain sporting goods store.

FWIW they still make high end mountaineering gear that is pretty widely used.

Negative, it is too mainstream, not to mention expensive as well.

Well did the quality go down? Exclusivity seems like a bad reason to buy an outdoor jacket.

I agree. although I haven't bought anything from them recently only because the gear I bought 20+ years ago is still good.

I feel bad for people who are actually into hiking, climbing, and the outdoors in general. Hipsters have stolen your look and you're now guilty by association.

They just diluted the brand. Making a bunch of really shitty fleeces to be sold at 50 bucks a pop (like Columbia did) changed how people look at them.

No, not at all. Only the trend factor has been affected as you can see by Killz post.

I'm not laughing. But I did laugh at how you bought a flannel shirt made by a company called FayetteCHILL.

None of the hipsters I know (I live in Seattle, I know plenty) wear anything that resembles outdoor gear.

outdoor apparel is the one trend that bridges the gap between hipster and fratstars

Their (north face) thermoball jackets are nice. Very light, can pack down and be used as a travel pillow, and is surprisingly really warm for how light it is.

I'm just honored that Shreveport started the great North Face trend of the 2000's.

I first saw it here in the 90's. I think Campers Corner or Sports Spectrum was all that carried it. Once our secret got loose in Baton Rouge with college kids going down there for school all hell broke loose and BR rode it into the ground.
