And that mindset is why things will only get worse for us. We're facing an enemy that does not share your aversion to genicide. In fact, they openly advocate genocide. Like it or not, we are in a war of civilizations. The Islamists are trying to destroy our civilization and replace it with theirs and nothing short of their own destruction will stop them. In such a war you're left only two options.

1. Surrender and accept your fate
2. Destroy them totally

I know you want some sort of compromise in the middle, some sort of negotiated peace. But how can you have peace with an enemy when their one and only goal is the total destruction of your civilization?

I agree with the veteran that if we can beat the Japanese, we can beat ISIS. Let's not forget we were fighting an actual Army with the Japanese that were far more advanced than ISIS.

If the UK, EU and US came together to combat this, they could beat ISIS. We are talking about the most sophisticated military in the world vs a bunch of goat fricking radical Muslims. Many of whom we know exactly who they are and where they live.

Robert Gates (former Sec of Defense, CIA and/or NSA for 26 years and CIA director under Bush) has a pretty good take on it.

Also, let's not turn this into a "should we have went into Iraq" discussion. The point would be to eradicate ISIS, and then help the good guys hold on to control.
