Apparently you have never had to purchase general liability insurance. It's not really the stupid lawyers, it's the stupid drunks.

Would you not do the same if you were liable for everyone on the float? You people act like these ropes are preventing float riders from moving. have you never noticed they only have a few feet of room as it is?

I agree with that and I'm not criticizing that because I've been a stupid drunk on a float myself. I've also driven a vehicle in the BR St Paddy Parade and when you are sober watching what happens its pretty awakening.

People just don't understand the danger for one and the actual liability organizers are responsible for.

People say its stupid to wear a harness but those people would be the first to blame the float owners when they get drunk and fall off. Just human nature.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't. It's not like your strapped into a plane seat or anything. In most cases the ropes are probably too long to even help someone falling off

Look I know why they do require us to do it. Personally I don't believe you should be able to sue the krewe because you decided to bring a drunken uncontrolled a-hole. but you know that's the society that we live in nowadays.

Doesnt mean I can't call the whole thing stupid.

No such thing as personal responsibility nowadays but that is an issue for another thread

Last year was the first year that I actually wore the harness and used the rope. It really wasn't that bad. The only issue is that the rope is so long that it drags the ground when I put it over the side of the float. If I fall I am cracking my head on the pavement, safety rope or not.

I dont ride in a parade, but I've often worn safety harnesses and lanyards at various job sites.

How long is this rope/lanyard? What do you tie off to or clip on to on the float? If you can tie off behind and above you, that should eliminate the trip hazard. If your lanyard reaches the street, you need a shorter lanyard or need to tie off in a different location.

This thread hasn't been totally hijacked, but I'm gonna contribute to the hijacking. I'm in Endymion, 15th year, we spend 560 a person on beads. Some guys I ride with have been in for 30 years, got it down to a science. If you buy all your stuff from the krewe, I think that is way too much to spend. The whole weekend, including a hotel, for me is about 2,000-2500. It isn't cheap, but my family has done it for about 30 years. We definitely do not have new beads every year. Get them from all sorts of places.

DUES- 975
EXTRA FEES- 95- tickets, food in dome getting ready
THROWS- 560
HOTEL- 650-700

For the guys that are spending under 1K on throws, what types of throws are you buying to have enough for the whole parade? 1K is not much for throws especially if you buy from the krewe.

I'm curious about this as well, so I can rethink my throw-buying strategy for next year. I'm riding in Thoth for the first time this year and spent approx. $1,400 on throws. That was spent on about 35-40 gross of beads, stuffed animals, cups, frisbees, 15-20 boas, and about 4 dozen footballs. I didnt buy anything smaller than 48" 12mm beads.

I figured for my first year it would be better to have too much than too little, so I figure I'll have a better idea on what to spend next year.

Tigers102886 -- Rode in thoth the past two years and I rode with 30 cases of 48"10mm, 15 cases of 60"18mm, 5 cases of 60"22mm as well as some boas and large stuffed animals. It is a long route so I think you will be good with what you have. Just pace yourself at the beginning and you can tell how your throwa are going as the route goes on.
