The real soul of New Orleans was the blue-collar White people who now live in Mandeville, Slidell, Houston, Atlanta, etc.

There are a few of them still toughing it out in the eastern part of Metairie, and if you want to experience New Orleans the way it once was, that's where I'd send you.

Meanwhile the white population of Orleans Parish consists largely of people from Pennsylvania who supplement their trust funds by selling kitschy garbage sculptures and post snarky BS about Jefferson Parish on /r/NewOrleans.

Sad.

It also made BR significantly worse.

That's cute.
Let me introduce you to the primarily white neighborhoods in Nola that don't fit your simpleton blanket statement.
Lakeview
Lakeshore
Lake Vista (basically everywhere between Robert E Lee and the lake from 17th street canal to UNO).

The areas north, east, and south of City Park (most of mid-city).

Most of the upper garden district.

Still is. In fact, I'd say BR is now worse than New Orleans in terms of being ghetto.

New Orleans WAS one of the richest cities in the country for most of it's existence.

Before the first Landrieu took office 50 years ago, New Orleans was larger than cities like Atlanta, Miami, Nashville and Charlotte. New Orleans was the economic capital of the South. Now we are not one of the 50 largest cities in the country. New Orleans is not even in the top half of the STATE in median household income.

Someone earlier said Katrina hurt New Orleans and that is a canard. Katrina simply exposed the problems as much as it hurt us. We had a CHANCE after Katrina but decided to rebuild for the moochers instead of the producers.

None of that's really "blue collar" at all. Mid City, maybe to some extent, but that's more white-hispanic these days than the white blue collar types he seems to be referencing.

Of course, the demographic he's referencing doesn't really exist at all in any city-proper in this country anymore, so it's sort of silly to lament it just for New Orleans.

I moved to New Orleans in the late 90's and have been here ever since. The fact is that starting in about 2009, it has become a MUCH MUCH MUCH better city than it was on August 28, 2005. Period.

To be fair, neighborhoods like Treme are being converted into a land of Airbnbs and vacation/secondary homes with some families sprinkled in.

You say that like it's a bad thing. If they are coming in and fixing the places up and not renting to people running 24/7 drug and/or prostitution rings out of them then it beats the bleeding, blinding frick out of what was there before.

If there were another way it would have been done by now.

You think those are the blue collar types?

I agree with the poster. The blue collar whites that lived in the wards are the soul of NOLA that no longer really exists. The Chalmations are the only ones left

Yeah but can’t you see how people improving an area is oppression? Or are you just blinded by your white privilege
