Your wife is family you picked, your mom isn't.
I don't believe in the whole you have to love your parents and family and stuff. If they are good people of course, but if they are arse holes then why waste time?
Best course of action, stay the hell out of it. If anything make your wife and mother act like adults and hash the shite out on their own.

He never said who started the fight? If his wife did he needs to tell her to handle it her damn self. If his mother started it he needs to tell her to handle it her damn self.
No reason anyone should have to take sides in these situations, any woman that makes you pick sides needs to grow the hell up.

I'd just call my mom and tell her her chill the frick out and that the issue, whatever it is, is over. I'd never tell the wife I made the call, but I'd tell her I don't want to hear another word about it. That part wouldn't work but hey I'd give it a try.

It is UNREAL the amount of people I know with MILs who hate them. 99% of the time, mom started the feud.
I asked my mom about it (being that I have a brother), and she admitted that the feeling of "your baby being taken away by some bitch" is a very real and common feeling for most mothers. It is just knowing not to act on it.
The mothers who I've seen in situations like this are women who are used to getting their way.. usually mothers with no daughters. They've been spoiled by hubby and sons their whole lives.
