which original band members are actually still alive? I know Skynyd is doing a farewell tour now.

Gary Rossington is the only one left. Ed King left the band before the plane crash, but IMO he was their best guitarist.

He had received a heart transplant some years back, probably developed some complications. He had left the band right before the plane crash, and rejoined when they revived the group after the crash, but left again because of heart related health issues. He was probably the most talented member of the group in my opinion.
