Nice commuter car options

With the VW TDI debacle, looks like I'm getting a new car at the end of the year. Not many cars I want to drive, so looking for some options. Pretty limited to cars since I drive 70 miles a day.
-Needs to fit 4 grown men (taking customers to lunch)
-Needs to get at minimum 30 mpg highway (preferably better)
-Can be a hybrid (just not like a prius or some shite)
-Under $40k
-Can be an SUV or truck as well l, but I haven't found anything close to that mileage
-ETA: Leather interior pretty much a must also. Have a toddler, and just can't go back to cloth.

Why not spend a little extra and get a 5 series? I'm not sure you can get anything decent for under $40k.

Honda Accord is the only answer

If you are driving four grown men with any regularity at all, you need a small SUV. This is especially true if you are in sales.

You know you could keep the Volkswagen.

I'm looking at the Mazda 6 if we use the buyback for ours

In a Jetta, would like to get bigger anyway. Plus the deal they are giving is to good to pass up.
Big car easily can take 3 customers to lunch. I've got a Tahoe as well. Not necessary to drive that all across Houston just to go grab lunch.
Only car that really piques my interest somewhat is a Lexus ES300H. MSRP is just over 40k.

Camry Hybrid fits that criteria. The Avalon Hybrid would be a better choice but it's more than 40K

2015 Dodge Charger SXT. 8 speed tranny gets around 33mpg highway in a car as big as a small suv

Ehhh... not really.
You could keep it and get it "fixed" but who knows what that'll do to the car.
Or, you could keep it, reject the buyback and the fix and... be liable for all the environmental issues and probably never get an inspection sticker again.
So basically, sure yeah you could keep it, but it's not the right or best decision.

2016 Honda Civic
They're cheap and get great gas mileage, almost 40hwy. Very comfortable to drive and have more space than you would think.

I'm just saying, if you are in sales, the car does matter somewhat. Don't come pick me up in a tiny little car just so you can save on gas money.

I know you're going to think I'm crazy but look at the Honda Fit. I've had it a rental multiple times and it fits your criteria.
However, it's ugly
ETA: you can get a new one for about 18k

Get a 4 door Golf R...and a manual transmission. A Passat would be nicer, but less fun.

Top of the line Accord or Camry.
Use it up and trade it in.

I get what you're saying. It's why I want something a little higher end. I could buy a 2 year old Accord cash and it'd serve the purpose. But I want something nice and comfortable. Just not sure I want to spend 60k on a car to get a "higher end" ride. I wouldn't be in a car at all if it weren't for the commutes I make.
Completely comfortable spending 40k, but it seems that doesn't quite get me there. Anything between just seems meh.
