New York : Los Angeles :: a road trip with a smartass with a beer gut and a hard hat who has recently tried out for a part in Streetcar at his community theater because his pension at his construction job allows him to work part time now that he's in his 50's : the same road trip with a bleach-blonde, fake-titted, botoxed 48-year-old who has gotten by on her looks since she was 11 and is adjusting poorly to the fact that with each passing day, fewer people want her snatch

I love both for what the are. I'd pick LA due to the quick access to beaches and mountains.

If you can afford the food, nightlife, entertainment, I agree with you. Though NYC has become a tale of two cities. A stat you don't hear advertised- 46%. That's the percentage of people in poverty in NYC. Also the average price for an apt in Manhattan-$4000/month. That's a steep price to pay for 'quality of life'.

As probably the only person here who has lived in all three (admittedly, BR only for LSU), I would unequivocally say NY.
Again, though, it depends on which parts we're talking about, as well as who you are and what you want from the place. It's far from a one-size-fits-all question.

I'm with this, id much rather live in manhattan than hollywood or downtown LA. Santa Monica isn't really a suburb of LA though, SM is it's own city, but really is just an extension of west LA/westwood that is awesome because it ends at the pacific ocean.
studio city, sherman oaks(where i live), encino and other places in the SFV are the real suburbs of LA, and great places to live. traffic/parking is a lot easier than "the city" as we call it.

No one who lives in the Valley thinks of it as "Los Angeles", even though it's officially LA city limits. The various parts of the Valley were their own little towns for quite awhile before LA annexed the entire area, and to this day they still use those names.
As an example, non-Valley LA city zip codes are all in the 900xx format. Valley zip codes are 910xx.

I know the history, but it never seemed right with me when people said they were from Sherman Oaks/Woodland Hills/Encino/Van Nuys..etc...,California. Its very confusing...
