New Snapchat Update: Surveillance State?

The new update is pretty amazing. If you swipe two fingers toward each other it brings up a map where you can see random peoples' stories from all over the world.
Is this great new technology that will bring people from all over the world closer together OR is this 1984 come true and the dream program for the Surveillance State?
I personally think it's awesome, but I do see how a lot of problems could arise from this.

I don't think Snapchat is blazing the trail for tracking us. Everything in our phone already tracks our every action and movement.

People always invoke that book and make me wonder if they read it. The scary part of it wasn't surveillance, it was the government's enforcement of laws and suppression of ideas. On a platform like Facebook or snap chat where anyone can share whatever stupid idea they have with no consequence from the government, that's about as far from 1984 as you can get.
If you really want to talk about orwellian scary shite, talk about idea-police hijacking language to control narratives. That's scary shite.

That's pretty crazy. Even if you don't have a story up, your friends can still see where you are. You have to actively put yourself in 'ghost mode' to hide your location from constantly being on the map.
