New Roads teacher turns self in for inappropriate contact with student

A teacher at a New Roads private school was issued a misdemeanor summons this week after officers found her in a parked car with a male student from her school, New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald said Wednesday.

The police chief said his office responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Monday about a suspicious vehicle someone spotted in a parking lot on Olinde Street in New Roads. An officer found the teacher, Skylar Russell, 23, in the vehicle with a male student.

They were both clothed at the time and police don't suspect anything sexual transpired between the pair before officers arrived on the scene, the chief said.

Authorities would not release the name of the student because he's a juvenile, nor would they disclose his age or grade level. But McDonald confirmed Wednesday that Russell was a teacher at False River Academy.

The student was not enrolled in any of her classes, he said.

False River Academy is a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade private school in New Roads.

Russell was issued a misdemeanor summons for attempted carnal knowledge of a juvenile, McDonald said.

The police chief said Wednesday his office had concluded his investigation of the incident and was turning the file over to the District Attorney's Office.

"We don't suspect anything sexual ever happened between the two," he said.

Calls to the private school went unanswered Wednesday morning. And the principal of the school did not immediately respond to an email request for a comment on the matter.
