The grace period for New Orleans' newest battalion of traffic cameras ended Thursday evening (Feb. 9). Drivers caught speeding or running red lights at dozens of new locations -- or by one of the 10 new mobile cameras around town -- are now on the hook for the $105 fine. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said his administration will continue to install 45 new cameras at 32 sites to complement the 66 already in use at 42 locations. After focusing first on school zones, the full roll out will conclude in April. The administration insists the fines are administrative only and will not result in marks against driving records that would translate into higher insurance rates. The cameras also will not be used to prosecute infractions beyond speeding and running red lights, according to the mayor's office. To trigger a camera, a driver must be going at least 10 mph above the speed limit in a non-school zone and 6 mph faster in a school zone. Landrieu had that threshold increased in 2012. School zones across the city are in effect between 7 and 9 a.m. and from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. The new cameras will be monitoring the following intersections: Napoleon Avenue @ St. George's Episcopal School Fontainebleau Drive @ St. Rita Catholic School Prentiss Avenue @ Holy Cross School Martin Luther King Boulevard @ Sylvanie Williams Prep South Carrollton Avenue @ Lafayette Academy Canal Street @ St. John Lutheran School Napoleon Avenue @ St. Stephen School St. Bernard Avenue @ Nelson Elementary School Magazine Street @ St. Katherine Drexel L.B. So the 5% of people that pay them will help hire new, competent police? Nah

If you get the boot you pay.

They also bought 100 new license plate reading vans with the $40 million budgeted for "crime prevention"

Glad they're putting their resources into fighting the real crime in the city. Thanks Mitch.

Joke's on them. Spanish Ft Blvd is so bad you couldn't drive faster than 20 mph on it if you wanted.

Im glad someone is finally thinking of the childrens safety!!!
I'm sure, since it is for that reason, the cameras will be turned off on weekends and during the summer when classes arent in session.

So now they're admittedly just in it for the money to try and catch people in school zones. I wonder how many people will get these tickets at 8:50-8:59, or from 4:30-4:45? And for that matter, who will ensure that the cameras account for school holidays and closures?

That city definitely has their priorities in order.
