quote:

EnChroma Labs founder Don McPherson (a materials scientist) had originally engineered the glasses with surgeons in mind. The lenses contained rare earth iron and absorbed a ton of light to protect surgeons performing laser eye surgery. The boosted absorption also made colors pop more vibrantly, allowing them to more easily distinguish among different tissues during surgery. But the stellar eye protection and vibrant colors meant that many surgeons wanted to wear them outside the operating room. McPherson himself started using them as regular sunglasses. And when a color-blind friend tried them on, he was amazed: He could distinguish orange traffic cones from the grass and pavement around them. He was perceiving color in a way he never had before. Now EnChroma sells the glasses (which have been specifically tailored for color blindness since the accidental discovery) for a few hundred bucks a pop.

Anybody heard of these glasses? Any truth that these work to any degree?

I’m mildly red/green colorblind (duetan). I bought a pair of their sunglasses last summer. Those videos you see of people crying tears of happiness are pure marketing.

It made things appear brighter and more vibrant but for me it wasn’t worth the price tag. Definitely not anything life changing.

That is exactly what I had in my mind after ordering. Maybe it will help him ID his birds some. That would be worth the price of admission.

I mean it depends on the severity of your colorblindness. They work similar to how phones/electronics have color blind filters these days. They aren't strictly pure marketing, but results vary. I'd say they were worth it.

Success! He loves them. While staring out at his bird feeder this morning a mature bald eagle came soaring through the snow covered mountains which didn't hurt the experience, but he is well pleased.
