he original plan was to put it in White Castle. My cousin was an engineer who worked on the St. Francisville bridge. They were supposed to finish that one an start on the WC one.

i highly doubt the same team that won that bridge "won" a bridge that hasnt even been funded. That not how state contracts work.

makes no sense...
When that bridge was funded it was pushed to be near BR and BR turned it down. St. Francisville was in the back with their had raised and now the bridge is there.

This has crossed my mind quite often for many cities. Reduce the local traffic from the passing thru. NY/Chicago does it.

It was part of a TIMED rural infrastructure program that benefited just about every part of the state but Baton Rouge.

The proposals to widen I-10 in Baton Rouge look very promising IMO. Click the link for videos, layout maps, etc. They are including flyovers and braided interchanges.

NBR has outstanding infrastructure with a comprehensive road grid, well-developed schools, sidewalks, major freight rail access, and even underground utilities in parts. It's conveniently located near 2 of the state's largest employers: Exxon and the state government offices.

There are only 4 things holding back NBR:
1. Bad building codes that make it impossible or prohibitively expensive to demo or renovate existing blighted buildings.

2. State's inventory tax resulted in warehouses relocating just accross state lines in Texas and Mississippi to avoid the tax, resulting in dozens upon dozens of abandoned warehouses all over NBR.

3. Crime.

4. Bad school performance.

The latter two are inextricably tied to the population that lives there, while the former could be easily changed administratively. Retail won't come because the "shrinkage" rate (i.e. How much shoplifting they can expect) is too high and the real estate is run down. Building codes make renovation too expensive (need to improve electrical system and fire protection to modern codes, need for ADA compliance which requires specific door widths, handi-accessible bathrooms, and wheel chair ramps) or impossible (needed number of parking spots on lots with no room to expand), so it all sits idle.

The only way to fix the latter two problems is with entitlement reform. The people of NBR don't not work because they cannot or because there are not enough jobs. They don't work because entitlements permit them not to and punish them for doing so. Thus, they have to turn to crime to suppliment their incomes without risking losing their subsidies. Since black markets don't have courts and police to resolve their disputes, violence governs. The government is a shitty landlord (no requirements by section 8 landlords to maintain their properties and tenets, seeing as this is their only option, don't care) so the section 8 properties quikly deteriorate. People who don't plan on working for a living don't care about school because school holds no value to them, and public schools, these days, teach few tangible, interesting, or obviously useful knowledge for these kids, so they only go because they have to, and f$&k up the education for everyone. The government won't allow the schools to discipline them, so they just become a nuisance.

Government has failed NBR and countless neighborhoods like it, and forced all law abiding citizens to pay the price.

Crime's not that bad in downtown east anymore. There have been several new residential complexes opened there in recent years, a friend of mine lived in the Corona for a while. Rent was great and never had an issue.

The centerpiece of Downtown East's gentrification effort is the BR/NOLA train station. There are tons of plans to redevelop the Entergy property as the station and surrounding properties as mixed use and new residential.

Good to hear about the Corona Apts. I didn't know about them.
It's the old Olinde's building.

I bought a tv there way back when.

Glad to hear your friend had a good experience there. It's not too far from Sacred Heart Church and the old CYO I use to play in.

My thoughts would be bringing in a bypass would increase volume to NBR and allow real estate developers to begin the process of rebuilding blighted areas around the new highway leading to a trickle down of investments eventually spreading through all of NBR.

I suspect that if they could widen Airline to 6 or 8 lanes and cut out a few of those traffic lights, it could actually be a decent alternate route to the daily traffic tie ups on I-10.

I have been telling this to my friends and family for a couple years. start it right after the bridge when the road goes back to grade. Just keep an elevated section and run it out passes highland and past Juban. That would help through traffic and put more impact on the further side roads away from main roads and hwys.

I just want my flying cars. Boom, problem solved (with all sorts of new ones created but we can tackle that when we get there.)

The mayor-president also said she will convene a panel of experts to find solutions to Baton Rouge's notoriously bad traffic problems.

Unless she has a magical loop stuffed in her back pocket, traffic issues will remain pretty much the same throughout her tenure.

No man, round-a-bouts is the way to go. Look what they have done for Central and Zachary where they put them. Two intersections that had very little traffic and few backups.

Of course the loop is nothing more than a giant round-a-bout, but BR doesnt want it because it would lose money from people who stop to eat or get gas while passing through.

This along with 4 lane-ing Nicholson from Alex Box to the aformentioned intersection would be a game changer. Need cooperation from AP to do it

The intersection of 30/74 by River Road is in St. Gabriel, which is Iberville Parish and the crossing would be south of Plaquemine.

They would never want that highway 4-laned because the traffic backup at that intersection is a real moneymaker for them. There is a road that parallels LA 70 right near the prison with a speed limit of like 10 mph. Cars waiting in line to turn get frustrated and gun it down that road and get pulled over for massive profits.
