Ok, OT peeps. I own an older home and I have been putting off getting an alarm system. Now I want one.
Any companies recommend for this job?
I live in Prairieville btw.

How much does it normally cost on average?
Thanks in advance!

Most alarm systems are wireless nowadays. Make sure you review the service contract before you sign it. Companies will try and slide a 5 year contract in there on you for free installation. They are very predatory.

Most alarm systems require very little hard-wiring, most window and door sensors can be installed wirelessly.

We have ADT for alarm and video monitoring.

Most are wireless now days and look into TattleTale and Simplisafe for a cost effective solution to paying exorbitant fees for monitoring and contracts.

Unfortunately, you'll probably need wireless. I had an older home and did this. When the contact batteries quit, be sure to have $9 cr123 batteries handy.

Anybody here use any services like these? Are they worth a frick? I have ADT but I'm getting tired of paying almost $50/month.

We have Capital Security, privately owned company in Baton Rouge. Older gentleman owns the business and was very helpful. I called around and got a lot of quotes, his was the most reasonable. Ours is also wireless.

I'd call three local companies and get prices from each. Hardwired is preferred but most will want to go the wireless route in a home of that age. I'd go with Honeywell or 2gig for hardware.

I had a wired system and it went to shite. It was cheaper for me to upgrade and go wireless. I have Protection one.

Had the Vivint sales representative knock on my door yesterday.

I didn't answer.

I watched him. He only picked houses out that did not have security cameras visible.

Smart move. But these guys and that company are shady. At best.

I got hung up with one of those guys a couple of years ago. He went through the sales pitch and then asked me based on what I was currently paying, how much did I think all that service would cost me. I told him $40/month. He gave me this dumb look and said well actually it was $60/month. He left quickly after that.

Another story, my builder shopped around for the best price on wiring the house and got some company out to do it. The installer was a nice enough guy, the guy he worked for was a BSer and looked just like Ron White. When I went to activate the service after we moved in, I went with a different company that was cheaper. They came out to activate it and said the installer had done something to lock the system so nobody else could get into it. From what they told me that wasn't legal. I called Tater Salad to get the code and he was highly intoxicated. Started yelling and cussing. About that time the guy who was connecting the service said he managed to get into it so I hung up on him. Not sure how much of that info is still applicable, but if a guy who looks like this shows up tell him no thanks.
