Need Advice From Louisiana Electricians

I have a GFCI outlet that I want to replace with an outlet that has USB ports. It is on our kitchen island so I don't want to put one of those USB adapters over it because of aesthetic reasoning.
It is the only outlet on the breaker and the breaker is tied to the refrigerator breaker.
What are my options that keep me compliant with code?
I live in Lafayette Parish.

Just change it out with a gfi with USB ports

Or you could change the breaker to a gfi breaker and put in a receptacle with ports if you do choose, but that will cost more

I haven't found existing GFI outlets with USB.

A single GFCI receptacle generally protects everything in the circuit...this circuit may include some combination of kitchen, bathroom, garage, etc.
just trip the GFCI to see what outlets in your house stop working. Then replace one of the other outlets with a GFCI and replace the current GFCI with a USB outlet.
I am no electrician, but this would be my guess.

I think my only option is to put a gang box right there but I've decided to replace another outlet that is standard.
Thanks anyway guys.

Only God and electricians make light.

You can protect the breaker and be code compliant still.

I could do this but then I have an outlet unprotected.
Posted on 2/27/17 at 7:47 pm to dkreller
Everything on the circuit would be protected

It looks like there is just one outlet down stream. I guess I could put the GFI on the end and my USB in the first spot. Would that be compliant?

Yeah you're right. I'm dumb.

What is the proximity of the outlet a water source?
Posted on 2/27/17 at 8:14 pm to csorre1
The GFI outlet is in the wall above a half island. The standard outlet is in the half island. No sink in island.

Receptacles that are non dedicated in kitchen areas are to be GFI protected.
Your problem is that you want a specific place to plug in your USB w/o being GFI protected. In your situation you can't do it, legally as I see it.
How about working within the system?

Does not matter as of years ago! If in a kitchen and non dedicated it's got to be protected.
