Make your bet for money and avoid this stupidity. Don't bet a lunch if you care about how the lunch is financed. That's the actual easy answer.

What if he paid for it with a gift card that had been given to him by someone else? Does he still owe you lunch since he didn't actually pay for it?

If you are the winner in this bet, and you are trying to get another free meal out of this situation, that is pretty fricked up. Is this a friend? I'd buy it for you if you really needed it, but it would definitely be an eye-rolling, respect losing situation.

If I was the winner of this bet and it happened that way, I would see it as win-win, since I got my lunch AND a buddy wasn't out any money. Winning the bet is the bigger reward than receiving such a small payout as a lunch.

In any case, you should at least accept a soup at Mendy's as a fair compromise in this situation.

That's not the same at all.

The gift card that he now owns is as good as money at this point. He can use it as money. If he used it to pay his debt (i.e., buy person A lunch), then that would suffice.

It's exactly the same. The guy provided a meal. He didn't use his own money.

If you want to try to lawyer the bet, you have to do it both ways.

I didn't miss it. What you quoted was my feeling on small bets like this. Your opinion is petty as frick, if this is a friend of yours.

Then bet money next time or make the shite clearer. Damn, you're one picky sumbitch. I'd buy your whiny arse another lunch and be done with you.

No, having the meal comped because something was wrong and paying via gift card are definitely not the same thing.

For the reason OP is crying like a bitch about this, it is. Someone not directly involved in the bet paid for the meal in both scenarios.

If the winner still ate the food despite it being messed up, then he should have demanded the lunch not be comped so the loser still had to pay for it.

Nope. If he owns a gift card then at this point it is his to do with as he pleases. It's his money. Same as if he had been given $20 as a birthday present yesterday and used that money to pay his debt. At this point he has the choice of using it to buy himself a lunch or use it to pay for my lunch (to pay his bet). It's just like money.

In the OP's scenario he didn't depart with any money.

That doesn't make any sense at all. If the dude is using a gift card, he is paying for it. He who is directly involved in the bet. Via a gift card, sure, but paying for the lunch all the same. If it's comped, then no one is paying for it.

But, you're LNCHBOX, so I'll just leave the thread now.

You should, because my point is perfectly right based on OP's reason for complaining.

No, your point is as fricked up as a football bat, but you have an online arguing fetish, so this is turning you on. You probably touch yourself anytime someone quotes you and disagrees don't you?

Part of the fun in betting with friends is this kind of stuff so you can rib each other about it. I'm sure the OP doesn't really care or need the lunch, but it's the principle of the matter. His buddy is trying to get out of buying lunch because he got a windfall. The OP isn't letting him get away with it. Sounds like it is in good fun to me.

It's not the same, because the gift card was, in practice, payment for a future lunch for the loser. Since he used it to pay for the winner's lunch in your hypo, he now has to buy that future lunch with his own money.
