Went out to lunch today and encountered a diverging diamond interchange where I26 intersects Airport Road here in Asheville. What is the purpose of this configuration?

It makes you drive on the left across the overpass!

Wikipedia
quote:

Like the continuous flow intersection, the diverging diamond interchange allows for two-phase operation at all signalized intersections within the interchange. This is a significant improvement in safety, since no long turns (e.g. left turns where traffic drives on the right side of the road) must clear opposing traffic and all movements are discrete, with most controlled by traffic signals.[3]

Additionally, the design can improve the efficiency of an interchange, as the lost time for various phases in the cycle can be redistributed as green time—there are only two clearance intervals (the time for traffic signals to change from green to yellow to red) instead of the six or more found in other interchange designs.

Basically better safety with potential for improved efficiency. Also seems to require less ramps/etc. to be built.

I don't know but I had a hell of a time with the interchanges when I was in Asheville about a month ago. This is probably why.

It cuts out the need for a left handed turn arrow. You are always on the side of the exit. Thus it improves the flow of traffic because you cut out the wait time on the green arrow.

Seems really pointless and bloated. A perfect example of a government project

The advantage is people getting on or off the interstate don't have to cross lanes of traffic or stop at a stoplight

It's to avoid creating the costly clover leaf you see on typical exits.

There's been talk of doing that to College Drive here in BR. It's basically a way to move more traffic without having to add lanes. If you look at how it's configured, it basically allows for protected left hand turns onto and off of the highways without a need for red lights.

The British are slowly retaking our country

driving on the left side of the road is just the latest ploy

Kate Middleton was the last one before this

They're great for high traffic intersections/exists.

no it doesn't. it's the opposite of "bloated". it's less lights, less wait, and less clutter.

210 and Nelson in LC was supposed to be changed to this. I don't know what the hold up is or if it was cancelled. The new Cove Ln and 210 interchange is a tight diamond interchange with a roundabout. It works pretty well apart from drivers coming off the interstate and blowing through the stop sign at the end of the ramp.

Youtube vid of accident at said intersection.

It's been in operation for several years at the Airline/Siegen/Sherwood Forest intersection and has really made a difference. I understand that these are commonplace in Mexico and other countries.
