Memphis is perhaps the worst city south of the Mason Dixon line and Nashville is one of the best.

Jackson, Montgomery, and McAllen would like a word. Memphis at least has some distinct culture to it and a few things going on. No where on Nashville levels, but it's present. Those cities I just said are pure slums.

There are some good job opportunities in Memphis. The downside is that you have to live in Memphis.

I won't pretend Nashville has better BBQ now, because obviously Memphis BBQ is tGOAT. But there is now some fire arse BBQ in Nashville. It's becoming more and more a food city too.

I haven't seen this word used in this way since my teen years, is it making a comeback?

If you take the Memphis job you should still live in Nashville.

I grew up near Memphis.

All the bad stuff is true.

On the other hand, north Mississippi is a nondescript thriving suburban area interchangeable with about anywhere else. The state line protects them.

Think about that. The best part of the Memphis metro area may well be in Mississippi, i.e. Memphis is looking UP at MISSISSIPPI in terms of quality of life.

Oh, and the Ozarks aren't in West Memphis but it is only maybe an hour and a half or two to some nice foothills area around Hardy, AR and environs (but the Spring river is infested with trashy people any of the good times to float it). It is probably only 3 hours to the Buffalo, which is quite nice.

Nashville is one of the best cities in the US. Memphis is one of the worst.

Nashville is really nice and the new 'in place' ala Austin in '00s, Den in '10s, but also starting to gain the same moniker as they eventually did 'overrated'

I was a big fan of Edley's when I lived there last year.

I just don't see the similarities to Nashville and Autsin.

Austin always seemed like a little hidden gem that became unhidden; whereas, Nashville has been on a solid growth trajectory but always a popular and well-known destination due to the music.

Has Nashville embraced the Country-hiphop craze, or does it seem the locals are still standing by their roots?

Serious question
