My energy bill hovered for a 1 bedroom apartment around $100-$115 every month for 3 years. Now since November of 2020 it's crept up steadily now up 30% around $150. It all appears to be in the base charge too and I'm not really using much more energy compared to last year. I'm working from home more but I can still see that my total KWh isn't that much higher and I've been working from home since March of last year and none of last summers bills were out of the ordinary.

What gives?

Demco sent an email out that basically said the price to produce the Entergy is high right now and is out of there control. Bills will be high for the foreseeable future.

Do you have Entergy? If so, here's a little tidbit that pisses me the frick off every time I have to pay the bill.

My cousin is a pilot for Entergy's private fleet. They keep him on payroll but he flies maybe 2 or 3 days a month. That was a business necessity maybe 10 years ago but not today with Zoom, Teams, Skype, etc. It's absurd.

My bill is up 28% YoY, same kWh used, from last year. This is strictly due to price and surcharge increases (Cleco).

Your power bill has the base rate charge (fixed cost per kwH, set by the PSC) and a fuel charge (variable cost per kwH).

The power company buys fuel (natural gas, uranium, coal) to operate the power plant at market prices which are passed on to customers with no markup. So if natural gas prices go up, your fuel charge goes up even you consume the same amount of power. The base rate only changes every few years, fuel costs change every month.

Same here. Got the letter that they are going to have tiered rates, and the higher bill surely reflected that. Guess we have to try to keep it under 1000 kwh to keep our old rate . What I don't understand is why have a 1000-1500 kwh bracket, before jumping to the highest tier at >1500 kwh? Seems pretty pointless.

GD you pay $150 for a 1 bedroom? My bill is like $100 in a 3k sq ft. house. Get some energy efficiency, insulation, new windows, something baw.

Actually, my bill is a little higher than that but you still paying too much for an apartment. I can't imagine it's that big.

When the kWh surcharge per hour goes from something like 0.015 to 0.036 well there you go

Nope. It’s about getting ripped off. Why give money to someone else’s pocket?

How does Cleco have a tiered rate based on usage then? They obviously deviate from the base (the lowest of these tiers is the same rate it's been for a while).
