You really should kill yourself if you choose Monopoly or Risk... you're likely to poison your children against the joy of board games forever.
For more than two players... easy enough for eight year olds but challenging enough for any adult:

Ticket to ride is a great family game. Just don't let Anne Wheaton any where near the board when it's time to tally the final score.
+10 nerd points to anyone who understood that reference

Easy but fun card games you've likely never heard of, but far superior to the boring mindlessness of UNO:

I know that Will Wheaton has a board game review website.

Gotta throw Settlers of Catan in the mix, too. It skews a little older, about 10+, but it's a game my whole family loves to play and even the young ones play good enough to win.
And though it's not a board game, don't underestimate the appeal of Dungeons and Dragons to the 10+ crowd either. The new fifth edition rules are really easy to work with and you would be surprised how quick kids will ditch their video games to play at the table.

We love the Mexican Train domino game. Anybody can play and it doesn't last that long so you can play as many times as you want.
We also play Phase 10. Good for 4 to 5 people.

Thanks, I'll check out all of those.
Wits and Wagers is pretty much our favorite right now.

I'm leaning toward the Ticket to Ride, Europe Version.
If nothing else, help me with my (lack of) European geography.
Settlers of Catan looks like it has big props too.

If one likes trivia games, Bezzerwizzer is fun.

Forbidden Island is a good co-op game, and it has the advantage of not being $50 or more like a lot of the new board games.

My son lives to play dominoes. My daughter rathers Rummy.

Do NOT get Sorry fire and ice. Been a constant fight since we got it.

How old is he? That's pretty mindless stuff.
If he likes tile placement games then you REALLY should get THIS, which you, too, are likely to enjoy:
