You're pretty helpful, this is why I brought this to the OT.

Look at shirlington, it's Arlington county right on 395 and right next to Alexandria City. You're close enough to DC/Clarendon/Old Town that it'd be a cheap uber if you wanted to go out there and the commute wouldn't be terrible to Lorton. Shirlington has a decent strip of bars so you have walkable options.

Del Ray in Alexandria City is another neighborhood I'd look at. A little east of shirlington but same idea really

Don't live in Lorton or Springfield if you care about anything other than your commute. Both are commuter towns with nothing but subdivisions families and strip mall bars.

Got any suggestions on apartment complexes, or should I go with craigslist? Roommates or nah?

I would not live in lorton, but Springfield is close enough to be able to hit up all the hot spots in NOVA/DC easily. besides, my strip mall beer tastes just the same

I don't know the names of any apartment complexes but shirlington has dozens of them. Del Ray is more of an older neighborhood with houses and some apartments.

Probably going to want a roommate or two. With that budget a 1 bedroom would be tough, they do exist for that cheap but it's not very common. I'd look at Craigslist

There's a pretty good "moving to dc" Reddit thread. Google it.

I'm from Springfield. It's incredibly convenient and a great place to grow up or raise a family but I would not recommend it for anyone single and under the age of 35.

I have a niece and a nephew that moved to Alexandria, right on the Arlington boarding when they were around your age. The still live there and love it. That area is great for single people.
Traffic does stink but you are right about going against traffic. From what I hear you have the chance to really like it there. Cool area.

I used to live in Arlington and DC and my office was in Lurton. It's a 30ish min commute because you're going opposite of traffic. Arlington is probably your best bet though. Clarendon/Ballston is great, but Pentagon City may be a bit cheaper and is right next to 395. I lived in the Avalon at Arlington Square my first year there before moving to Ballston.

When I lived in DC I was in Penn Quarter/Chinatown, which was pretty easy for accessing the interstate.

Working in Lorton. Rent looking in the $800 to $1000 range with roommates. I could afford a 1br, but I don't feel like paying $1500+

You will have to live in the ghetto or the boonies to find rent that low. Be prepared for sticker shock on everything. I lived in NOVA (Loudon County) for 15 years. It's beautiful and expensive. Fairfax is over crowded and stay away from Alex and Arlington unless you're rich or speak Spanish.

Lorton has gotten pretty nice since the prison closed down. A town that hasn't been mentioned that is very close is Occoquan.

It's a little town just across the river from Lorton and it's right on the river. Access to 95 and Prince William Parkway is great and you have 123 to get you up to Fairfax County Parkway.

I lived with 2 roommates when I first moved to Arlington and I was a 5 min walk to the Virginia Square metro. Including parking and utilities, my share was $865/month

You can live inexpensively if you're fine with roommates

I'm 31. At this points you're either gay or a weirdo if you have roommates.

So it costs 700-800 to at least have a shot with the women? I might just have to take my chances with a roommate if I was moving out that way.

Well I'm 27, by 31 I'm hoping to be in my own place. The main advantage to a 1BR is bringing back the ladies, and walking around naked. I realize a 1BR is $1500 minimum, I can afford it but frick me that's high. That being said I've seen several decent roomate situations in the $800- $1000 range. Looking for advice for people who live or have lived in the area.
