Forget all the other comments this proves my point, NO MONEY IS WORTH THE LOSS OF QUALITY OF LIFE WHICH LOUISIANA(BR FOR SURE)HAS NONE!

If one can live and work in town, BR isn't really that bad.

I enjoy living there because I live in Mid City and my job is downtown. My wife works out near O'Neil, but she commutes against the grain of traffic. I rarely sit in traffic, I have multiple excellent restaurants within walking distance, I can get anywhere I want to be in no more than 20 minutes (LSU, College Dr, Govt Street, Downtown, Citiplace, Town Centre, Bocage, Perkins Overpass, etc). I only have to sit in traffic if I want to drive out to the Mall of La or visit family in Ascension Parish.

Driving in BR sucks if you have to cross one of "the walls". These roads are often impassable at different times of the day:
I-10, Airline Highway, Lee/College, Intracoastal Canal, Mississippi River, Bayou Manchac, Bayou Fountain, Bayou Duplantier, etc. If you can get from your home to your work without having to cross one of those barriers and can afford private schools for your kids, Baton Rouge offers a relatively low stress life with a ton of upside.

If you have to cross these walls daily, the traffic will make you want to kill yourself and everyone else. You will spend your whole life in a car and never get to experience any of the positive attributes of Baton Rouge.

There is a ton to do in Baton Rouge. There are festivals practically every other weekend downtown, including, but not limited to: The Blues Festival, Fest for All, Earth Day, Jambalaya Jam, Roux Rally, Live After 5, Spanish Town Parade, etc.

There's a great, albeit small, underground music scene at places like The Varsity Theater, Spanish Moon, Mid City Ballroom, Dyson House, Tin Roof, The Guru, Red Dragon, Phil Brady's, and The Atomic Pop Shop.

There's premier college sports at LSU.

There's 2 breweries and a rum distillery in town.

There's great restaurants and bars all over the city at all price points.

There's frequent Mid City Art events like Hot Art Cool Nights, White Lights Nights, Bee Nice Concerts, Mid City Makers, Mid City Rising, Ogden Park Crawl, etc.

There's all kinds of great social clubs like the Happy's Running Club, Varsity Running Club, Bengal Belles, Blues Foundation, multiple different dinner and alcohol tasting clubs, etc.

Baton Rouge is a great place to live if you do it right and embrace it, rather than living in some crappy suburban neighborhood, never venturing out except for chain take out, and complaining about how boring it is while never participating.

If you plan to live near where you work, if you enjoy alcohol, food, music, art, and sports, Baton Rouge is actually a pretty damn fun place.

Going to be working in Plaquemine, so something relatively close to there is preferred but don't mind driving as long as it's within an hour.

Boy..........you can't live anywhere in Plaquemine, cause it's all trashy. Too many minorities and crime.

You're then looking at an hour worth of driving in optimum conditions, and that could very easily turn into 3 hours with bad wrecks and the bridge.

Honestly, you'd be better off somewhere way out in Ascension Parish.

So basically get drunk and party I do neither so, my solution was to move somewhere that truly provided things to do for EVERYONE. I'll credit you for art/social clubs but not sure if all ethnicities are truly welcome. So that could be an obstacle

People who say this envision plaquemine as ww harleaux and bayou sorrel.

It isn't either.

Sorry you're poor.

Uhh...where the f&%k do you think you are? This is a majority black city. Of course people of all races are welcome because there's no other choice. This is an integrated city. While there's lots of racial political posturing, the arts, entertainment, cultural, and social scenes all cut across all races and demographics. Just don't be a TPOS and you're good.

Also, you don't have to drink to have a good time. I barely drink and I have a great time. Atomic Pop Shop is BYOB. All of the festivals can easily be enjoyed without alcohol. In this town, you can easily enjoy life as lush or not as you want to be. As with most places, it's what you make it.

The biggest glaring fun things Baton Rouge is missing, however, are good nature trails and outdoor activities. There's plenty of good fishing and boating in easy driving distance, but there's not much hiking or anything like that near by.

Hey my man I understand, do what you feel you have to do. To have money and be miserable due to quality of life is a terrible feeling. I sold a profitable business moved out because of the misery in that place. BR that is

I agree. I left my old career because of it. The hours, the uncertainty, and the commute were killing my health. I'm much happier now. It's amazing what something as simple as shortening one's commute can do for them.

Moving to Baton Rouge soon, Advice Wanted

I live in Prairieville and work in Plaquemine. The commute is miserable. We are going to be moving to the west side of the river in the next couple of years. The ferry helps out at times as well as the sunshine bridge, but I would rather not spend 8 hours per week in the car.

You mentioned night shift...what would be your working hours? Depending upon shift hours getting there is not as bad as getting home, if you are living in BR/Ascension/Livingston. However a stalled 18 wheeler on the bridge can often turn a 40 minute commute into a 2 hour commute.

Sugar Mill is a good neighborhood to look at in Addis. The Islands in Plaquemine are also a good place, just gets pricey with very small lots.

Work 5-430. Normally on the roads from 4-5pm going in, out of the parking lot about 445am. Definitely trying to find something on the west side of the river but the rental market over here is shot due to the sheer amount of people on this project.

Maybe I'll just take some of yalls advice, up and quit my job, and apply for welfare or some shite like that.

Mornings you won't have anything to worry about if commuting from BR/east side of river. Only traffic will be contractors and employees at the plants. My commute from I10/73 in AP would only be 35 minutes at that time.

Afternoons would be a nightmare. Going MRB thru BR at that time would mean a 1.5+ hour trip home, and that's if there are no big wrecks.

Best of luck to you.

Living in a country club in the middle of a shitty river town isn't my idea of fun, but I'm glad it's good enough for you.

I may be moving back soon. Fortunately it would be with a company I love and I don't have kids to worry about.
