We consulted mass media reports of demographics, motives, methods, mental health, and victim characteristics of 64 FSKs who committed their crimes in the US from 1821 to 2008. Consistent with other studies, our data showed that FSKs were typically White, educated, have been married, and held a caregiving role (e.g. mother, health care worker). Nearly 40% of FSKs in this sample experienced some form of mental illness. Their most common motive for murder was financial gain, and their most common method of killing was poisoning. FSKs knew all or most of their victims, and most were related to their victims. In all cases, FSKs targeted at least one victim who was a child, elderly, or infirm – those who had little chance of fighting back. LINK

Another little known fact is that while the majority of serial killers are white when you adjust for population black people are actually more likely to be serial killers than whites

Very interesting topic but I can only access the description of the article. I'd be interested to hear the cases they included in the study.
I wonder if they included people like Mary Beth Tinning. 10 of her children died as infants or toddlers in the 1960s and 70. Doctors just concluded it was a tragic inherited condition why her all children kept dying of "crib death" But when a child she adopter died as well, then nurses and docs were incredibly suspicious.
But it was not till her 9th child was born and was killed that they arrested her. She was convicted of only ONE murder and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. LINK
ETA: Technically she may not be classified as a serial killer as she has only been convicted of one of the deaths. She has been denied parole 4 times. I think if she ever does get out, they will prosecute her for another death and keep her in jail.

I saw on mysteries at the museum about one who poisoned many people. Her motive: she liked going to funerals.

We are so used to crime statistics being skewed to blacks that we see serial killers as a predominantly white thing. Its crazy how different our perceptions would be if statistics actually followed population percentages. Especially in the south, people for get that only roughly 1 in 10 people are black. Only 10% of criminals should technically be black. Blame that on profiling or whatever, it's still a staggering disparity we currently have.
