Ahh so I am "overweight" because some universal scale says so? Even though I am stronger/faster/healthier/more in shape than I was at any weight before this...all with a 6 pack?

Yes, you are overweight. I am not saying you are fat but you are overweight. Skinny people live longer.

I like being around 180

I was 6-'3 x 185 when I graduated high school and was too skinny. I have a wide frame, broad shoulders and hips.

no smoking two packs a day is unhealthy, my gm isn't obese by a long shot...she's always been pudgy AND in good health...I just find people to be so different in many ways that a standard that calculates whether or not you're fat (and does so without considering other variables) is used by so many as a barometer for your all around health

it's silly.

there are so many "fat" people right on line of "overweight"/"not overweight" according to BMI that I think it makes these studies a fruitless exercise. 1 in 4 americans could lose 5-10 lbs, you easily be 1 in 4 americans are fat fricking shits...omg, an obesity epidemic...aaaaah

We are arguing different things

I have no opinion on BMI or BF% because I don't know enough about either to have one.

I just have eyeballs and live in the South.

Depends where the Walmart is

I think we actually agree on more than we are displaying here. I'm backing away.

True story: I had a late breakfast yesterday morning as I wasn't feeling well when I got up for work so I slept in a little. I stopped into a restaurant at about 9:45 and there was a grossly obese couple finishing up breakfast at the table next to me. After they finished they sat and waited until 10:30 when they started serving lunch and ordered [what I hope was only] their second meal.

No. Those who critically read these studies for a living with the proper scientific background know how to interpret the numbers and the conclusions. Something that the majority of people do not know how to do. So many studies are given too much hype by the media, much like everything else. It drives the scientific world mad.

No doctor is going to take one BMI reading and jump to a bunch of conclusions from it. It's one piece of information. If you are looking at an entire population, it does give you somewhat of an overall look. Conclusion? America is too fat. You can't really argue that.

and these are the statements that are mind numbingly stupid.

you mean all else being equal, then yes

but all else isn't equal...testing your logic on a global scale, it fails miserably.

I agree.

But all else being equal, such as a skinny person and a fat person of the same age/generation, mid to high socio-economic level in developed country, same height, same frame, similar family health history, same country, same access to equivalent medical care, etc.

Skinny guy lives longer on average.

Ok, NOW I'm out of this thread. Good day sir.

The OT. Where fat people are either defended vehemently or vilified depending on the thread title.

I've lost over 30 pounds over the last year. February of last year I went to the doctor and weighed in at just over 230 and my blood pressure was really high. Doctor put me on blood pressure medication and that scared the shite out of me because I'm pretty young. Started a diet that day. Stopped eating fast food altogether, started portioning what I eat (Probably the most important thing) and very rarely drink any carbonated drinks or sweet tea. 95% of the time I drink water and nothing else. I'm below 200 pounds for the first time since my junior year of high school and I feel great. I wish people realized just how bad fast food, even a little bit, and cokes are for you. If you just cut those out and ate fried foods only once a month or so, you'd lose weight fast. It sucks for the first few weeks of dieting. Stopping yourself from eating when your body is still telling you that you're hungry is one of the hardest things to do. But after you get past the first few weeks, it gets much easier.

After I lose another 5-10 pounds I plan on starting P90x

People are either being purposefully obtuse or are just way dumber than I give them credit for.
