I take it as a right of passage that we'll be stuck in traffic every time we vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico but it would drive me crazy if I had to deal with that all summer long.

Do you essentially forgo crossing through the tunnel from May to October?

I don't live there, but work in Mobile often. Things settle down when the LA and Texas people are in school/work.

If you don't live and work on opposite sides of the bay, its an after thought. Usually take the African Town bridge and bypass the tunnel.

I view it as rite of passage that builds character on the way to your destination

There are other ways to go bruh, this isnt BR we are talking about

And supposedly new 8 lane bridge coming in 2025.

Meanwhile BR has no plans to fix its traffic nightmare

"Right of passage" is indeed a thing, it's the legal right to travel across a property, much like an easement. But I think you meant "rite of passage" in this context, which has a different meaning.

Teenagers think they have right of passage across your back yard on their way to their prom. The senior prom is a rite of passage for that time of life.

Yes. There are 3 other ways across the bay.
Should start construction on a new bridge in a few years so that will help

There are ways around but unfortunately, some of the LA and TX folks are uncovering our secret.
The Mobile tunnel sucks but it is a walk in the park compared to the I-10 bridge in BR.

Like I said, it is what it is for me. I've heard other vacationers this week say a) they were leaving on Thursday even though their scheduled stay was through Saturday to beat the traffic and b) they were leaving at 5am this morning to beat the traffic. If that's your attitude, just stay home.

I avoid the tunnel at all cost. Almost never clear of traffic. Family members in Gulf shores this weekend and said there was a huge delay bc of a tunnel wreck yesterday.

Honestly, I'm not sure as to why people don't take this journey overnight to avoid all the drama with the tunnel. Just leave late and drive through the night incident free.

Good answer. I normally wait until around 7 in the evening to start over from New Iberia. Unless I run across a wreck somewhere, it is usually a nice drive.

Spring for an extra night at one of the hundreds of hotels once you cross the bay. Get up the next morning and go on down to GS

Well, make alternate arrangements with the check in time. Sleep in a hotel if you have to. It's easier than fighting with the tunnel.

The Wallace Tunnel? Is it closed or just down to one lane?
