virtually every pension fund in the State has a huge UAL. Somebody is going to be paying more taxes to make that up.

This 75 million has nothing to do with the pension. This 75 million comes from required raises that were not paid and required vacation and sick day accruals that were not paid.

The pension is a whole another issue.

It sucks because city pensions are complete bullshite. I don't blame the firefighters because it is their money. But now my taxes are going to spike to pay for this bad decision. Government employees should be on a 401k system like every other person in the private sector. That's an argument for another day.

Agreed. People will argue that it's only fair for what they do putting their lives on the line. But as a whole, government employee pensions are VERY lucrative. I mean, where else can you retire in your late 50s / early 60s and receive - in some cases - FULL PAY until you die. And then, take a second job to supplement your pension if you want more.

I pay into a 401K. I do not expect that it will give me FULL PAY when I retire. I will have to cut back here and there.

That's my beef since it's my tax dollars paying them to retire with lucrative pensions.

Mitch is such an incompetent useless frickhole, in comparison he makes Ray Nagin look like a good mayor.

Has New Orleans ever elected a mayor that wasn't a colossal frick up?

It' about time they enforced the damn ruling.

Is it fricked up that I'm thinking about my inheritance at this very moment?

Mitch is being a dumbass about the statues and a few other things, but the above statement is the most ignorant thing I've read on the OT in a long time. Are you really comparing Nagin to Landrieu favorably? You're either grossly ill-informed or colossally stupid.

so where do you think the money will come from?

From the $580 million budget. It's not anyone's fault that the City has chosen to ignore its obligations as it has for decades with lots of what it's required to pay. The current administration hasn't even used the state-received supplemental pay to actually pay firefighters, it has devoted that money to other things. Now it's time to pay. If the City can't have swimming pools, statue debates, and parks, then that's what he's going to have to tell people.

Those groups get paid squat in Louisiana. Firefighters and police have dangerous jobs so I support their "absurd" pension plans 100%.

So why not pay them more on the front end? Would get better candidates.
This pension thing is just kicking the can down the road and in the meantime we have difficulty recruiting talented people.

And NOLA has already been voting to pass every proposed tax increase. They just had one that creates a large increase in spending on the libraries in the city that no one uses.

I hope this is not brushed under the rug either and the judge "pursues him relentlessly" as our NOPD chiefs like to say.

I don't know the answer, but they have to. This is the fire fighters legally earned pay. My guess is cut 15 million in spending for 5 years.

Mitch used his political capital on the stupid statue removal. There will not be anybody riding a white horse to save him now. I knew someone who sued the city successfully and was told to stand in line like the rest of the creditors. This was pre-Katrina. Guess he can copy Detroit and file bankruptcy

I wonder if we can take down some more statues to help solve this. Quick Mitch, what can we remove that will solve this problem?

I agree with you on that one but I'm not sure what that has to do with my comment regarding that low pay and dangerous work imo deserves a good pension.
